The Grounds and Building Maintenance Technician is responsible for the preparation, care, and maintenance of all athletic fields, courts, and playing surfaces, as well as the upkeep of common areas across campus. This position requires regular interaction with coaches, athletes, and other school staff to ensure facilities are safe, functional, and well-maintained. During the off-season, the technician provides support for a variety of facility maintenance needs across the campus. The role requires initiative, sound judgment, and the ability to adapt to changing priorities. The standard schedule is 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.; however, hours may vary based on seasonal demands, events, or specific assignments. This position reports directly to the Director of Facilities.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Performs routine maintenance of athletic fields, including mowing, trimming, and edging.
- Maintains landscaping across all athletic facilities.
- Installs, inspects, and maintains irrigation systems to ensure proper operation.
- Clears playground surfaces of debris on a weekly basis or as needed.
- Applies treatments to playground wooded areas for poison ivy, poison oak, and insect control.
- Renovates athletic fields by installing sod, pruning, and coordinating with subcontractors on top-dressing, over-seeding, fertilization, and pesticide application.
- Prepares athletic fields by painting and striping as required.
- Operates, maintains, and performs minor repairs on equipment such as mowers, tractors, trimmers, chainsaws, aerators, and similar tools.
- Identifies turf diseases and pest issues and applies appropriate corrective measures.
- Partners with Athletics to ensure grounds are in compliance with all NCISAA (North Carolina Independent School Athletic Association) regulations.
- Maintains a clean and organized workspace, shop, and equipment.
- Conducts monthly inspections of all areas; generates work orders for needed repairs and monitors progress.
- Maintains campus grounds by cleaning common areas and removing trash from receptacles at all athletic venues and exterior landscapes.
- Cleans and sanitizes trash receptacles weekly to prevent pest infestations.
- Applies salt to walkways and removes snow as needed during inclement weather.
- Assists with set-up and breakdown of special events.
- Maintains professional and courteous working relationships with staff, faculty, parents, and event coordinators.
- Operates school vehicles to transport supplies, materials, and equipment.
- Provides assistance to the interior facilities team during non-growing season months.
- Performs other duties as assigned by the Director of Facilities.
Qualifications
YEARS OF EXPERIENCE:
3+ years of experience preferred
EDUCATION REQUIRED:
High School Diploma
Associates degree preferred
A degree in turf management is preferred
