About the Team
The Systems Engineering team is responsible for the requirements, architecture, and validation of autonomous driving capabilities across engineering disciplines. This includes designing performance metrics, evaluation methods, and criteria for success, which the team then drives cross-functional via requirement definition and system validation. Systems Engineering works at the intersection of hardware, software, and robot operations, with a deep understanding of technologies in all three. We are a small, high-impact team that sets the checkpoints for autonomy deployment.
About the Work
- The role of a systems fault detection and response engineer falls into 3 broad areas:
- Safety-critical architecture (analysis and documentation) to quantify how to catch faults in a comm-based diagnostic system and how to define faults on that framework
- Fault injection of the known and defined faults (coverage requirements, testing and mitigations)
- Contingency planning (requirements and testing)
- The ideal candidate should be able to design analytical or statistical experiments to quantify functional safety manifested in appropriate robot behavior as a function of faults.
- Should efficiently communicate everyday with the engineering teams to enable efficient iteration of design decisions. Experience in self-driving is not a necessity, but willingness to learn rapidly on the job is.
About You
- Understand the robotics sense-plan-act loop
- Hands-on Python experience and read C++ code
- Experience in systems engineering or related: requirements and/or testing
- Strong communication skills - verbal and written
- Strong understanding of the mathematics behind physical systems and sensors/actuators

At Nuro, your base pay is one part of your total compensation package. For this position, the reasonably expected pay range is between $167,200 and $250,800 for the level at which this job has been scoped. Your base pay will depend on several factors, including your experience, qualifications, education, location, and skills. In the event that you are considered for a different level, a higher or lower pay range would apply. This position is also eligible for an annual performance bonus, equity, and a competitive benefits package.
