2024 Intern, Bioinformatics Software Engineering

The Role:

Moderna is seeking talented interns to join the Bioinformatics Software Engineering team. This is a great opportunity to work with experienced Senior Software Engineers advancing Moderna’s mRNA therapeutics platform. This internship will run from June 3rd-August 16th .  After the summer internship, there may be an opportunity for you to continue working at Moderna on a part-time basis (10 to 20 hours per week). 

• Collaborate with scientists, researchers, and senior engineers to understand and define requirements of bioinformatics software.

• Meet at least weekly with your mentor for guidance and collaboration.

• Present at least once to the Bioinformatics team.

• Debug issues, fix bugs, and improve the performance of existing software tools used by bioinformatics pipelines.

• Write automated tests to ensure the quality and reliability of the software.

Basic Qualifications (all roles):

• Degree in Computer Science; Engineering, Bioinformatics, or related field.

• Knowledge of one or more programming languages such as Python, C++, Java, or R

• Familiarity with Docker

• Comfortable working in Unix environment.

• Familiarity with software development methodologies and practices, including version control, testing, and code review.

• Good communication skills and the ability to work effectively in a team.

• Must be curious, eager, open to learning, and independent.

• Authorized to work in the U.S

• Minimum GPA of 3.4

Preferred Technical Skills

• Previous experience working in cloud environment such as AWS.

• Knowledge of workflow languages like NextFlow, WDL or CWL.

• Familiarity with data analysis and visualization tools.

• Experience with bioinformatic pipelines for sequencing data analysis.

• Previous co-op or intern experience

• Course work in data structures, algorithms, or software design
