About the role
LOWER SCHOOL 1st GRADE TEACHER (Full time to cover a family leave from August, 2026 through December, 2026)
The Head-Royce Lower School is seeking a dynamic, creative educator to join our first grade team for a period of time to cover family leave. Our homeroom teachers have a contained classroom of approximately 20 students and deliver content and skills in language arts, social studies, science and math. In addition, teachers use the Responsive Classroom approach, Toolbox and our school’s mission to support social-emotional and character growth. Our faculty create classrooms that encourage students to participate in experiential learning, take risks, view the world through multiple lenses, utilize innovative tools, and demonstrate proficiencies through a range of assessments that include real world problems and performances. Beyond the classroom, teachers are expected to take on Lower-School-wide duties and participate in the life of the community.
Located on a 22-acre campus in Oakland, California, Head-Royce School (HRS) is a pre-eminent, co-educational, independent, K-12 day school with a 138-year history. Our mission is to develop students of character, intellect, and creativity. We deliver on our mission by living our values:
