Working individual that is responsible for layout and review of work of a small crew in the Trucking/Materials Division and/or any division within Public Works as needed.

Job Description

Field Work/Leadership - 60%

• Direct the work of a small, specialized work force performing or supporting road maintenance or construction activities of the Public Works Department with advanced knowledge of road construction and maintenance procedures.
• Manage the daily work of a trucking/belly dump crew as well as a contracted trucking crew that will be under the direction of the Trucking Division.
• Effectively communicate tasks and assignments to the work group(s) under their direction.
• Direct and track individual employee/crews involving multiple locations.
• Positively motivate employees under their direction to accomplish the work assignments.
• Communicate back to the foreman, problems and hinderances to accomplishing the work assignments.
• Carry out daily assignments of the foreman.
• Familiar with Chapter III of Weld County Code.
• Must effectively direct/supervise employees placed under the responsible charge of this position.

Administrative - 30%

• Daily accounting such as loads hauled, material transported, and hours worked for the work group(s) under their direction.
• Input daily tasks into and workflow into Cartegraph.
• Responsible for layout and review of work by field personnel for all aspects of Weld County Public Works activities.
• Plan and organize workflow to accomplish work assignments.
• Make necessary adjustments in the field to account for changing conditions and needs.
• Effectively communicate with outside contractors, employees from other divisions, other lead workers, foreman, and supervisors in order to carry out the mission of the Public Works Department.

Other Duties as Assigned - 10%

• Assist in the performance of the duties assigned to the work force.
• Support Emergency Management responses and be available to respond to and work extraordinary hours.
• Must be dependable with attendance, work schedule requirements and/or on-call duties.  Will be required to perform higher functions when working in emergency operations.
• May be required to be a snow patroller or assist with snow related duties as needed.

Required Qualifications

Required Education

High School Diploma or GED

Required Work Experience

3 years working experience in a position equal to Public Works Service Worker III.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

• Must have a basic familiarity with and experience working with a variety of road construction, maintenance and repair equipment and materials.
• Must be able to read and speak the English language sufficiently to converse with the general public, to respond to official inquiries, and to make entries on reports and records.
• Must effectively present information in one-on-one situation with the public, subordinates, and supervisors.
• Demonstrate problem solving skills to overcoming problems and hinderances to accomplishing work assignments.
• Demonstrate the necessary leadership skills to successfully accomplish the duties and responsibilities described herein.
• Requires skills and knowledge of construction, maintenance and repair work in a specialized area.
• Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos with the ability to write simple correspondence.
• Add and subtract two-digit numbers and multiply/divide with 10’s and 100’s. Perform these operations using units of money, weight, measurement, volume and distance.
• Apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions and make appropriate day to day decisions without supervisory guidance to perform assigned tasks.
• Ability to operate the heavy equipment related to the performance of the job duties.
• Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.
• Ability to make appropriate day to day decisions without supervisory guidance to perform assigned tasks.

Licenses and Certifications

• Driver License, Valid and in State.
• Class A CDL License

Valid Colorado Class A CDL license with tanker endorsement.
