Job Description Qualifications:

The Boeing Research & Technology (BR&T) Mission Systems & Autonomy (MS&A) software capability is seeking a Satellite Flight and Payload Software Engineer (Mid-level / Senior) in Huntington Beach, California.

The selected candidate will work with the BR&T Payload Products & Technologies (PP&T) product team focused on the concept, requirements, architecture, design and development of an advanced space-based imaging sensor payloads. The position will involve creating software products for image sensor payloads and space vehicle flight control.

The selected candidate will work with the PP&T product team on providing complete solutions, including systems engineering, optics design, algorithms, software development, firmware development, and electronics. The candidate will work with software product-line owner, program managers, and development leads to create common software products and tailor for use on a portfolio of customer-funded programs.

The successful candidate will work across programs to ensure software products are developed for commonality and tailored to meet mission need. The candidate will work with development leads for satellite flight and payload software, firmware, and algorithms to ensure engineering excellence and achieve program objectives.

Position Responsibilities

  • Develop flight and payload software requirements, architectures, designs, interfaces, and code in VxWorks and Linux

  • Develop flight software that implement guidance, navigation, control algorithm and image processing

  • Integrate command and telemetry systems that communicate with ground systems and mission operations.

  • Integrate flight software into processor in the loop and hardware in the loop

  • Provide support in real-time operating systems, real-time software, schedulers

  • Support the integration of software components in VxWorks

  • Drive flight and payload software product line architecture and strategic reuse across all programs

  • Drive software execution to deliver products on-cost and on-schedule to programs

  • Responsible for satellite and payload software safety, assurance, quality, and engineering excellence

This position is onsite. This means that the selected candidate will be required to perform work onsite at one of the listed location options. This is at the hiring team’s discretion and could potentially change in the future.

This position requires the ability to obtain an active U.S. Top Secret/SCI Security Clearance (U.S. Citizenship Required) and ability to complete a CI (Counter Intelligence) polygraph after employment start.

Coding Challenge:

Basic Qualifications (Required Skill/Experience): 

  • Bachelor of Science degree from an accredited course of study in engineering, engineering technology (includes manufacturing engineering technology), chemistry, physics, mathematics, data science, or computer science

  • 5+ years of experience with software development in a collaborative team environment using agile principles and a structured development process including code reviews and DevOps processes/tools

  • 5+ or more years of experience developing and debugging software using high level programming languages (C and C++)

  • 3+ years of experience working with real-time operating systems (RTOS)

  • 1+ years of experience with satellite or space-based payloads

  • 1+ years of experience automating software builds, unit tests, integration tests, deployment, and installations using a DevOps tool chain using Artifactory and/or Gitlab.

Preferred Qualifications (Desired Skills/Experience): 

  • Active Security Clearance

  • Experience working with satellite communications or telemetry systems

  • Experience with new product development with small, agile teams on fast-paced, dynamic customer-funded programs

  • Experience with fault tolerant architectures and designs
