Job Description

NREL has an opening for a Fire Protection Engineer. This position will support all technical aspects of the Fire Protection Program within the Environment, Safety, Health, & Quality Office. This position will report to the Fire Protection AHJ and will address site wide fire protection engineering activities as a subject matter expert (SME).  Key responsibilities include:

  • Contribute to the development and implementation of NRELs fire protection program in accordance with DOE orders and standards, applicable codes, and NFPA standards.
  • Apply sound fire protection engineering principles to assist in researchers in accomplishing research efforts.
  • Assist in establishing, modifying, and overseeing fire protection program policies and procedures to support implementation of DOE O 420.1C and other applicable codes and standards.
  • Support compliance with applicable hazardous materials codes and standards (e.g., International Fire Code, National Fire Protection Association 2, 30, 45, 55, 855, and 400).
  • Support the implementation of the Life Safety Code (NFPA 101) during the renovation of laboratory facilities.
  • Conduct technical reviews of fire protection drawings and calculations (including but not limited to fire sprinkler systems, fire pumps, storage tanks, special extinguishing systems and fire alarm systems).
  • Participate in activity hazard analysis for research experiments as fire protection subject matter expert. These may involve batteries, hydrogen, refrigerants, semiconductors, processes involving hazardous materials, and other unique activities. Work involves assessing how various codes apply to a particular activity and ensuring project team incorporates accordingly. New and novel experiments are expected.
  • Develop, implement, and oversee policies and procedures for inspection, testing, and maintenance of required fire and life safety systems (fire protection systems, fire barriers, emergency lighting, etc.)
  • Manage the NREL Fire Barrier Program, including training, plan reviews, and inspections.
  • Participate in project management for new construction activities as it pertains to fire and life safety. This includes plan review, construction meetings, field inspections, and commissioning. Serve as fire protection lead on multiple new construction projects and tenant improvements.
