Job Description

AECOM is seeking a Lead Energy Planning Engineer, Decarbonization Technical Lead to join our High-Performance Buildings team. This highly-collaborative, multidisciplinary team provides design leadership and advisory services to clients striving to realize more sustainable and resilient building portfolio operations. The role is based either in Orange, CA, Los Angeles, Seattle, San Francisco or Chicago.

The successful candidate will be responsible for leading a team in the development of campus and portfolio-wide decarbonization and resilience strategies. The role is primarily technical in nature, with a focus on energy systems feasibility analysis and concept design. The types of strategies being assessed range from building retrofits to centralized thermal energy systems and microgrids.

The team’s recent and ongoing projects include developing early-stage design of zero-carbon district energy systems at UC Riverside and Toronto International Airport; portfolio net zero plans for SDG&E Facilities and major corporate portfolios in California; and working with NREL to develop a campus infrastructure planning digital twin.

The responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to:

  • Lead a team in the development of building and portfolio-level energy strategies, including, conservation, building electrification, district energy, onsite energy generation and storage, and microgrids.
  • Technical assessment of decarbonization strategies using a combination of modeling, proprietary software, and the development of customized analysis tools.
  • Preparing and presenting results and recommendations, in report or presentation format, to clients, design teams and internal teams.
  • Support of proposal efforts through the development of technical approach and associated fees.

The varied nature of our work must be reflected in our team's expertise and skills; as such we seek applicants with a solid understanding of the principles of performance-led design for both buildings and campus-level energy infrastructure, and power generation. A high-level working knowledge of these systems and a propensity for creative problem-solving is therefore critical. The ability to develop and communicate ideas clearly will be seen as a significant strength in any potential candidate.

This is a role for someone who shares our passion for decarbonization and wants to scale up and diversify their contribution to this transition. Our team is constantly growing, and this role provides a unique opportunity to influence the industry and shape a team to deliver decarbonization work for the future.
