Heavy Equipment Operator

As a Heavy Equipment Operator at GFL Environmental, you are the backbone of our site operations. You will be responsible for the safe and efficient operation of heavy machinery to process, bale, and move waste materials. We are looking for a precision-driven professional who takes pride in equipment care, maintains a clean job site, and prioritizes safety above all else to ensure our "Green for Life" promise to the community.

 

Key Responsibilities

• Precision Operation: Expertly maneuver excavators, front-end loaders, bulldozers, and skid steers to bale, load, and manage waste materials in high-volume environments.

• Preventative Maintenance: Conduct rigorous daily pre- and post-trip inspections. Manage fluid levels, grease moving parts, and ensure all gear mechanisms are clear of debris to minimize downtime and extend machine life.

• Operational Safety: Maintain constant situational awareness; use two-way radios to coordinate movements with ground crews, spotters, and site management to prevent incidents.

• Site Stewardship: Ensure the facility remains organized and aesthetically professional. This includes cleaning equipment tracks, managing litter, and maintaining ground integrity.

• Team Versatility: Adapt to changing site needs by substituting for other operators and assisting with general labor tasks to ensure seamless daily production.

• Regulatory Compliance: Adhere strictly to OSHA/CCOHS standards, local ordinances, and GFL internal safety protocols.

Requirements

• Education: High School Diploma or GED preferred.

• Certifications: * Valid Forklift Certification (required).

  • Ability to obtain Transfer Station or Landfill Operations Certification within [X] months of hire (company-supported).

• Communication: Proficiency in English (written and verbal) to document inspections and communicate via radio.

• Aptitude: Strong understanding of equipment gauges and basic mathematical functions for load tracking.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

• Self-Starter: Proven ability to execute daily tasks with minimal supervision while maintaining high productivity.

• Problem Solving: Ability to apply common-sense solutions to mechanical or logistical challenges in a fast-paced setting.

• Technical Literacy: Deep understanding of heavy machinery controls (levers, pedals, shifters) and the "feel" of different soil or waste densities.

Physical & Mental Demands

• High Dexterity: Must have the coordination to operate complex controls while maintaining 360-degree visual awareness (depth perception and peripheral vision are critical).

• Physical Stamina: Ability to climb in and out of high cabs, kneel for inspections, and lift up to 50 lbs.

• Environmental Resilience: Comfort working in a 100% outdoor environment, including exposure to extreme weather, noise, and vibrations.

• Environment: You will be on the front lines, exposed to the elements, moving mechanical parts, and the standard odors/dust associated with waste management.

• Safety Gear: GFL provides a high-standard safety environment, but operators must be comfortable working in high-decibel areas and occasionally at heights.
