40Position Summary
Our laboratory is an integral part of the Washington University Center of the Human Tumor Atlas Network (HTAN) part of the Cancer Moonshot initiative. The goal of the project is to produce the data to create a three dimensional atlas of various human tumors at various stages. The use of state of the art genomic, imaging, and bioinformatic techniques will be employed to create this 3-D atlas. The project is also a collaboration with five different institutions across the country. The Washington University effort begins in this laboratory and is dependent on the precise and consistent work performed here.Assists with the technical aspects of studies and experiments, including documentation and preparation of materials.
Job Description
Primary Duties & Responsibilities
- Assists with research studies, experiments and assays, including collection of data, preparation of solutions and set-up and maintenance of equipment.
- Obtains human samples from surgery operating rooms.
- Retrieves blood samples from operating rooms.
- Takes samples to Pathology for gross dissection and then brings back to the laboratory for processing.
- Assists in processing of blood samples received from patient participants.
- Curation of patient participant metadata (i.e., pathology reports, demographics, pertinent medical history, etc.).
- Basic histology techniques that include processing of tissue samples, embedding in paraffin, creation of thin section slides, and basic staining for digital pathology analysis.
- Performs data entry and maintains data files on research.
- Prepares tissue cultures, reagents, probe tests, etc.
- Complies with established safety procedures and maintains required documentation on laboratory and specimen conditions.
- Ensures lab conditions and equipment are properly cleaned and maintained in accordance with established procedures.
- Assists with general lab maintenance and cleaning.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Working Conditions
This position works in a laboratory environment with potential exposure to biological and chemical hazards. The individual must be physically able to wear protective equipment and to provide standard care to research animals.
Preferred Qualifications
- Demonstrated ability to work independently and communicate with laboratory staff and investigators.
- Ability to maintain complete and organized records/reports.
- Working knowledge of computer software and general lab equipment.
Required Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree and up to 1 year of experience in a laboratory setting; or an equivalent combination of education and experience equaling 4 years.

R06-HSalary Range
$16.92 - $26.44 / HourlyThe salary range reflects base salaries paid for positions in a given job grade across the University. Individual rates within the range will be determined by factors including one's qualifications and performance, equity with others in the department, market rates for positions within the same grade and department budget.Questions
