JOB SUMMARY:
Under direct supervision, the Peer Mentor for Project S.T.A.G.E. (Students Transitioning to Academics and Gainful Employment) responsible for relating to students with disabilities from diverse backgrounds. Guides and supports students in areas like time management, wellness, and academic success, helps student navigate the college environment with confidence. Provides individualized guidance and ongoing feedback and facilitates individual mentoring sessions with assigned mentees. Encourages positive life skills such as proper nutrition, fitness, money management, stress management, etc. Mentoring efforts will be focused on the following topics and skill sets: Adjusting to the college environment Time Management and Study Skills, College Clubs, Events, Resources, etc. Safety, Health and Wellness, Independence and appropriate college behavior.
SPECIFIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Provides academic and social support and encourages Project STAGE students to become independent learners.
Cultivates and maintains an environment that is conducive to student learning and development.
Participates in preliminary and on-going trainings and team meetings.
Serves as a role model for mentees by maintaining a positive attitude and cultivating relationships.
Communicates training needs and/or student concerns to the Dean’s Office and appropriate Project STAGE staff.
Provides weekly and/or monthly reports to Program Director regarding progress of assigned mentees.
Documents all mentoring sessions and maintains accurate student files.
Provides timely and opens communications with the Dean’s Office and appropriate Project STAGE staff regarding mentee progress, issues and concerns.
Adheres to all current IRSC and Project STAGE policies and guidelines.
Comply with Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA – 34 CFR Part 99).
Provides academic and social support as scheduled on a weekly basis
Completes all other duties and responsibilities as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS, KNOWLEDGE AND SKILL REQUIREMENTS:
Enrollment as a full or part-time student at Indian River State College (IRSC) in good academic standing and good student conduct standing after completing at least one (1) semester.
Pursuing a degree in the education or health and human services disciplines-preferred
Ability to convey academic skills, social skills, and life skills in a practical and comprehensive manner.
Ability to work independently as well as with others.
Strong interpersonal communication skills and ease in relating to people with disabilities and diverse backgrounds.
Willingness to make students active partners in the learning process.
