Job Description:
Scope: The ED Vascular Access Technician functions as part of a dynamic and collaborative Emergency Department team. This caregiver is an experienced professional with advanced phlebotomy and vascular access skills who serves as a resource to clinicians, nursing teams, and patients within the ED. This role is designed to support a need for rapid laboratory specimen collection, reliable and complex vascular access, and seamless diagnostic workflows—especially for critically ill or time sensitive patients. This position spends a significant portion of time performing hands on clinical work allowed by regulatory agencies, including complex specimen collection, assisting with ED diagnostic priorities, and coordinating laboratory processes that impact throughput, door to diagnostic metrics, and patient safety.Job Profile:
- Performs peripheral IV placement, including complex or difficult venous access cases (beyond the capability of Phlebotomy II).
- Trained in and performs ultrasound‑guided IV insertion for difficult-access patients in the fast-paced ED environment.
- Provides ultrasound workflow support, including image transfer, probe care/cleaning, and ensuring correct image assignment in the chart.
- Places External Jugular (EJ) IV lines when clinically appropriate and per policy.
- Serves as the primary resource for difficult vascular access across the ED and, when needed, hospital-wide (IV access, ultrasound-guided access, EJ support).
- Troubleshoots laboratory and specimen-related issues, including:
- Resolving incorrect orders or missing/incomplete orders.
- Communicating directly with ED providers to ensure correct facility‑specific lab orders and order sets.
- Coordinating add-ons, repeat labs, point-of-care needs, and complex orders with physicians, nurses, imaging, and the laboratory.
- Functions as the ED’s safety and compliance liaison for all specimen collection activity, ensuring regulatory accuracy and reducing errors.
- Manages complex and high-risk specimen setups, including infectious material handling, special packaging requirements, courier coordination, and communication of special circumstances.
- Utilizes Tempus technology (or equivalent ED/lab communication tools) and quickly engages laboratory personnel when equipment or processes fail.
- Performs and maintains Point-of-Care (POC) testing, including:
- Creatinine
- Hemachron device (PT/INR)
- Other ED-approved POC assays
- Conducts daily/shift QC, troubleshooting, and maintenance, and corrects failures in partnership with lab leadership.

Minimum Requirements
- High School diploma or GED as needed for CLIA compliance.
- Basic Life Support certification (BLS) for healthcare providers.
- Phlebotomy certificate or one-year previous phlebotomy experience.
- Experience working in a team environment under stressful situations.
Self-motivated and experience working independently. - Flexibility to work a variety of shifts that may include weekends, holidays, and nights.
Preferred Qualifications
- Phlebotomist II experience
- 6 month experience in acute care.
- Ultrasound IV training
