In the Department of Pediatrics at the University of Chicago, we strive to provide the highest level of complex care for children from diagnosis and treatment to conducting research to find promising new therapies with a focus on teaching. We are committed to advancing the frontiers of knowledge, and the education and training of future clinical pediatricians, subspecialists, educators, clinical investigators and physician-scientists.

The Center for the Science of Early Trajectories (SET) is composed of a diverse network of basic scientists, physician scientists, and clinicians working collaboratively to transform infant development research and establish a biologic map of the development of pre- and neonatal infants. Preterm infants are at risk for poor neurodevelopmental outcome due to their degree of prematurity, hospital course, and home environment. The SET Center, alongside the Claud Lab, studies the changes in the bacterial colonization patterns of these infants in the context of their home environment and to identify a potentially modifiable factor that may influence brain development and thus ensure school readiness for these vulnerable infants.

Job Summary
 

The position performs assignments related to scientific research projects. Ensures compliance of research activities with institutional, state, and federal regulatory policies, procedures, directives and mandates. Analyzes possible solutions using standard procedures. Writes articles, reports and manuscripts. Assists in drafting presentations on research findings. Orients or coordinates the work of research support staff and students.

This at-will position is wholly or partially funded by contractual grant funding which is renewed under provisions set by the grantor of the contract. Employment will be contingent upon the continued receipt of these grant funds and satisfactory job performance.

Responsibilities

• Under direction of the PI, coordinate and oversee execution of research projects and perform complex research- related duties and tasks. 

• Manage the day-to-day activities and the overall workflow of projects. 

• Responsible for having a working knowledge and awareness of all project components and initiatives. 

• Contribute to writing manuscripts. 

• Provide training and oversight to research support personnel and students.  

• Work independently and within teams on special non-recurring and ongoing projects. 

• Provide technical assistance to collaborators in executing research procedures. 

• Maintain working relationships with collaborative research partners. 

• Maintain technical and administrative support for a research project. 

• Analyzes and maintains data and/or specimens.  

• Assists with preparation of reports, manuscripts and other documents. 

• Applies research principles and relevant subject matter knowledge relevant to administer a research project. With a moderate level of direction, manages lab and/or research-related duties and tasks. Helps develop, design and conduct research projects. 

• Supports data collection and analytical needs of research projects. Conducts literature reviews and helps write reports and manuscripts. Ensures project compliance with different policies, procedures, directives, and mandates. 

• Takes responsibility for the following non-laboratory duties: transcribing and coding data; developing data collection instruments; presenting research; and recruiting and scheduling research subjects. Acquires higher-level skills and knowledge in the process. 

• Takes responsibility for the following laboratory duties: recognizing abnormal results and varying conditions or procedures to correct problems; setting up and performing experiments. Analyze the meaning, significance, causes, and effects of the subject. 

• Performs other related work as needed. 

Minimum Qualifications
 

Education:

Minimum requirements include a college or university degree in related field.

Minimum requirements include knowledge and skills developed through 2-5 years of work experience in a related job discipline.

Preferred Qualifications 

 

Experience: 

• Working knowledge of animal experiments. 

• Experience in a microbiome lab. 

• Working knowledge of Microsoft Office.
