Job Summary

Responsible for 24 hour service provided on or by a department /patient care unit. Directs staff in all aspects of patient care including problem identification, planning implementation, and evaluation of all patient outcomes. No more than 20% of the time will be spent off the unit. The remaining 80% will be spent on the unit, engaged with the staff in the provision of patient care. Interviews, hires, counsels, and disciplines personnel. Oversees orientation of all staff assigned to these departments. Responsible for Service Excellence for patients, staff and physicians. Must possess good leadership skills to include critical thinking, communication, team building, and decision-making skills. Administers and supervises the services of a department/unit to render patient care as related to the patient. Holds self and staff accountable for the delivery of quality patient care.

Minimum Requirements

Experience: 3 years clinical experience required; Recent L&D experience required; 1-2 years management experience required

Education: Completion of B.S.N. nursing program at an accredited school,

Special Skills: Proficient in the English language, verbal and written communication skills, computer skills

Licensure: Current Louisiana State license as RN and BLS certification; NRP and ACLS Certification within first 6 months of hire

Technical Tasks

  1. Maintains timely and complete documentation relating to personnel files

Critical Thinking

  1. Identifies the number and level of personnel needed to provide quality patient care for age specific and diverse populations and adjusts staffing and assignments appropriately to maintain continuity of care. Participates and supports methods for determining acuity/guidelines for unit.
  2. Maintains staffing levels within established hospital benchmarks agreed upon at budget time or when administrative revisions are done.
  3. Examines the delivery of patient care and identifies problems and any need for improvements.
  4. Provides and proposes educational programs to hospital employees, medical staff, and community on items that will help promote their department/unit and the hospital.
  5. Plans and arranges for department/unit meetings that are educational, problem solving and informative
  6. Assesses the need and participates in the budgetary process for a fiscal year.
  7. Facilitates quality improvement process as related to improving patient care. Consistently submits required reports on timely basis.
  8. Administers and supervises the services of a department/unit to render patient care and related services to the patient. Holds self and staff accountable for the delivery of quality patient care.
  9. Directs, supervises and participates in implementing planned changes and activities to improve patient care services in collaboration with the Administrator and/or Vice President of Patient Care Services.
  10. Monitors the expenditures/revenue payroll of the department/unit. Maintains expenditures within budget guidelines to include volume.
  11. Oversees the process of orienting new employees, provides assistance in development of competencies specific to the department/unit.
  12. Evaluates performance of personnel.
  13. Develops, implements and revises policies and procedures, standards of care, standards of practice particular to the scope of care provided on or by that unit.
  14. Reviews customer satisfaction reports and addresses areas that need improvement

Interpersonal Relations

  1. Interviews applicants in accordance with personnel policies and procedures
  2. Coordinates activities with other departments and divisions regarding needs of Patient Care Services.
  3. Keeps appropriate supervisor informed on reportable situations and department needs
  4. Acknowledges patient and family values in all aspects of their care and services
