The Early Childhood Mental Health Consultant (ECMHC) is responsible for providing early childhood mental health consultation and direct services support to MHEL staff, children, and families. The ECMHC will provide a broad range of services, including early childhood mental health consultation and direct services in classrooms and through home visits; training and coaching staff; screening, assessment and referral services and providing parent trainings. The ECMHC will also collect data, maintain records, and support compliance in all facets of Head Start Performance Standards and State regulations.

Essential Job Functions:

· Visit each assigned center/classroom at least once per week. 

· Provide child development information related to social-emotional development and mental health to teachers, families, and program directors. 

· Provide guidance to staff on selecting, implementing, and interpreting social-emotional screening and assessment tools and findings. 

· Provide guidance and model developmentally appropriate activities for children and effective ways to work with and support young children. 

· Meet with classroom teams to review classroom observations and develop and implement plans as needed.

· Provide written and oral observations and strengths-based feedback to classrooms as needed.  

· Work alongside MHDD and DWD to support, coordinate, and provide staff trainings related to social-emotional and mental health needs. 

· Participate in weekly staff team meetings. 

· Participate in the development and implementation of mental health program and policy. 

· Work with the Family Services Director to coordinate and facilitate parent training. 

· Conduct observations and assessments of individual children as assigned or referred for consultation. 

· In conjunction with mental health and disabilities team member, meet with families to consult on child and family needs and create or follow-up on plans to support these needs. 

· Conduct standardized developmental, behavioral, and/or social-emotional screens and assessments for individual children as assigned or referred for consultation. 

· Assist MHD team members in providing child and family referral and follow-up to community services. 

· Conduct home visits to support the mental health needs of families and children and provide guidance and model developmentally appropriate activities for children and effective ways to work with and support young children. 

· Participate in regular reflective supervision with MHDD, Program Director and clinical supervisor (if necessary). 

· Contribute to federal, state, and local reporting requirements.

Requirements

Essential Physical Requirements:

· Conduct activities involving standing, walking and sitting

· Ability to manage physically active children ages 3 to 5, including guiding, pursuing, and withstanding sudden movements.

· Lift, carry, push, and/or pull a burden weighing up to 50lbs

· Understand and manipulate office equipment and similar other tools and materials

· Participate in routine conversation in person or via telephone and distinguish telephone, radio/pager signals, alarms and other auditory tones

Required Position Qualifications / Certificates / Licenses (Required):

· Master’s Degree required, preferably in Social Work, Psychology, Counseling, or related field. 

· Minimum of 2 years direct experience in a mental health setting providing prevention services and/or mental health therapy to children and families. 

· Demonstrated effective communication and interpersonal skills

· Proficiency with computer-based software including Word, Excel, and Windows and the ability to learn in-house computer software

· Demonstrated customer service skills, ability to relate effectively and tactfully with all levels of the organization

· Ability to communicate effectively in both oral and written communications

· Ability to work individually and as a team member

· Clearance of CBI/Central Registry check and post-employment physical
