Overview
The Chief of Policy and Communications for the Mayor’s Office leads the development and execution of policy initiatives and communication strategies, ensuring alignment with the Mayor’s goals. This role is key in advising the Mayor, managing communications efforts, and representing the office to the public, media, and stakeholders.
Essential Functions
1 Directs policy and communication strategies for the Mayor’s Office.
2 Supervises policy and communications teams, fostering collaboration and high performance.
3 Advises the Mayor on policy matters and ensures alignment with strategic goals.
4 Leads media relations, including preparing press releases, speeches, and other communications.
5 Builds relationships with community stakeholders and elected officials.
6 Represents the Mayor at public events, meetings, and boards.
7 Provides strategic recommendations on legislative and policy matters.
8 Ensures compliance with legal and ethical standards.
9 Performs other duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
1 Expertise in local government, public policy development, and public administration, with a focus on policy formulation and implementation.
2 Proven media relations and strategic communications experience, including preparing speeches, press releases, and handling high-profile issues.
3 Ability to navigate political and community dynamics effectively.
4 Strong organizational, time management, and multitasking skills.
5 Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including speeches, policy briefs, and crafting clear, compelling messages for diverse audiences.
6 Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite and relevant communication tools.
7 Ability to conduct research, synthesize data, and prepare strategic policy recommendations.
8 Experience in business and professional writing for reports and public communications.
9 Leadership & Team Management: Experience leading teams and advising senior leaders in a fast-paced political environment.
10 Community Engagement: Strong background in building relationships with diverse stakeholders and representing elected officials.
11 Legislative & Political Acumen: Familiarity with legislative processes and political dynamics at local and state levels.
12 Political Savvy: Ability to navigate complex political dynamics and align strategies with the Mayor’s goals.
13 Strategic Thinker: Capable of aligning communications and policy initiatives with long-term city goals.
14 Crisis Management: Ability to manage high-pressure situations and maintain clear communication.
15 Relationship Building: Strong interpersonal skills and ability to build trust with stakeholders.
Education
Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Public Policy, Communications, Political Science, Public Administration, or communications-related field.
Experience
Five (5) years’ experience in Public Policy, Public Administration or Business Management, community organization and outreach or other experience related to Public Administration in a fast-paced political environment (e.g., mayor’s office, government agency, or political campaign) including three (3) years’ lead or supervisory experience.
Preferred Qualifications
Fluency in both English and Spanish (or another relevant language) is a plus.
Salary Range
