The RN coordinates abortion (AB) services ensuring the highest quality customer service and care for our patients. The RN also ensures compliance with PPFA Medical Standards & Guidelines and PPGWNI protocols. The RN and the Health Center Manager work on creating an ongoing work plan. The RN working in a health center that provides two-day bi-weekly abortion services will provide service directly in AB clinical services, site preparation/maintenance for the service, and administrative support when needed.
Essential Functions
- Lead the clinic AB team in providing AB services weekly. With the Health Center Manager, and the VP Clinical Systems and, manage patient flow and staff productivity on AB day. Oversees the AB Clinic team, ensuring optimum care quality. Assist the Center Manager, Call Center Manager and the VP of Clinical systems in scheduling patients/staff.
- Develop and maintain positive working relationships with the AB Clinic team, affiliate RNs, AB physicians and CRNAs. Follow protocol and doctor’s verbal and written orders as allowed under state guidelines.
- Practice with strict adherence to the standards and protocol. Ensure the entire team is practicing within the affiliate and providers guidelines.
- Provide unbiased, professional care to patients and assure all staff are doing the same.
- Learn and become proficient at performing vaginal/abdominal ultrasound on patient’s before/during/after the AB procedure at all gestations of the program.
- Review AB patient charts at the end of the day for accuracy and thoroughness. Oversee all charting and encounter forms for AB services ensuring completeness and accuracy. Follow up with staff and the VP of Clinical Operations as necessary to assure compliance.
- Ensure that a state report is completed for each abortion performed.
- Along with the HCM, review patient survey information to identify areas of improvement and help develop plans of action for improvements to ensure excellent patient experience.
- Maintain logs for abortion procedures, RH, and Narcotic log as required by PPGWNI/PPFA. Maintain all follow up and patient contact logs.
- Work in tandem with the AB nurse to ensure that in the event of a patient transport to the ER there is continuity of care, all patient info is verbally reported to the ER, records are transferred with the medics, and the patient’s support person is notified of the transfer.
- Follow each patient to the conclusion of care and assure that any delegated tasks are performed appropriately. If the conclusion happens after hours the after-hours protocol must be strictly adhered to. Check the chart for all of the appropriate documentation regarding the case completion.
- Oversee that all AB forms are up to date and being used correctly to ensure adherence to protocols and continuity of care.
- Along with the HCM and Clinical Training Manager, oversee and plan training of new AB staff and the on-going training of existing staff.
- Lead the huddle at start of day and the end of day AB debriefing with the AB team to discuss all relevant information including any issues, concerns, changes involving the AB clinic and/or obstacles to the delivery of optimal care.
- Perform clinical research and peer clinical education and training duties as assigned.
- Keep the Health Center Manager well informed of the AB Team status such as team dynamics, challenging care issues, problem patients, and all other information pertinent to the service.
- Assist the AB physician in leading the clinic effort in emergency situations resulting from AB services. Insert IV’s as needed for patient safety and emergencies. Lead and document clinic emergency drills for abortion services on a regular basis.
- Assist the AB coordinators at other sites and the AB nurses as needed to support high quality AB services.
- Assist the Medical Affairs team with administrative projects as assigned. i.e., help develop/institute new policies and procedures for AB services.
