The Director of Association Health Plans & National/Special Accounts is responsible for driving revenue growth and managing a portfolio of products within the association health plan and national/special account customer segments. This role leads strategies for retention and growth, ensuring alignment with corporate objectives and market demands. In collaboration with the Director External Sales, this position plays a key role in managing relationships, ensuring high levels of service and compliance, and developing strategies that align with corporate goals.

Compensation

  • Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Kansas offers excellent competitive compensation with the goal of retaining and growing talented team members. The compensation range for this role is a good faith estimate, it is estimated based on what a successful candidate might be paid.  All offers presented to candidates are carefully reviewed to ensure fair, equitable pay by offering competitive wages that align with the individual's skills, education, experience, and training. The range may vary above or below the stated amounts.
     

What you’ll do

  • Lead internal and external sales, retention, and consultative strategies for association health plan groups and national/special accounts, including oversight of SEHP, FEP, and National Alliance relationships.

  • Develop and execute long-term sales objectives, annual business plans, and marketing strategies aligned with growth goals.

  • Build and maintain strong relationships with brokers, consultants, and key decision-makers to drive new business opportunities.

  • Manage responses to RFPs/RFIs and ensure compliance with BlueCard, BCBSA marketing guidelines, Inter-Plan Programs, and regulatory requirements.

  • Provide expert guidance and support to prospective and existing clients on benefits and plan offerings.

  • Resolve complex account, provider, claims, and benefit installation issues to ensure client satisfaction.

  • Serve as a client advocate by delivering high-quality, consistent service and support.

  • Manage departmental budgets, staffing plans, and resource allocation to support strategic initiatives.

  • Represent BCBSKS at industry events, conferences and community functions, participating in professional organizations and contributing to thought leadership in the healthcare and benefits space.

What you need

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities

  • Strategic thinking and business acumen

  • Effective communication and customer service skills

  • Ability to manage complex sales cycles and long-term contracts

  • Knowledge of federal/state regulations, funding arrangements, and rating practices

  • Proficiency in time management and flexibility to travel (75% travel required)

  • Valid driver’s license and insurable driving record

  • Willingness to sign a non-compete agreement

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in business administration, health care, or finance/economics preferred. In lieu of degree, minimum of 8 years of experience with self-funded large group health accounts required.

  • Minimum of 8 years of sales experience required, with a minimum of 5 years of experience collaborating with brokers and agencies preferred.

  • Experience in association health plan sales, large group health sales, and national/special account development required.

  • Previous experience with Blue Cross and Blue Shield plans preferred.

  • Must obtain a Kansas insurance agent’s license within 60 days of hire. License must be maintained.
