SUMMARY
The Storm Water Services Engineering and Design Division is seeking up to 2 college interns for Summer 2026. These positions will have an opportunity to assist project managers and project engineers with all aspects of drainage evaluation, engineering, and design activities.
Salary: $20.00/hr
Major Duties and Responsibilities:
- Complete hydrologic and hydraulic analyses models.
- Use AutoCAD 3D for drainage analysis and plan production tasks.
- Interact with the public, meeting with property owners to represent the city.
- Review drainage calculations and construction documents.
- Provide project management assistance.
- Complete stream and channel design techniques to resolve erosion.
- Develop construction cost estimates.
- Coordinate utility conflicts with local utilities.
- Assist with acquisition of storm drainage easements.
- Conduct pipe video sessions in the field.
- Field review of drainage construction practices.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
- Interest in applying engineering design techniques for stormwater modeling and design tasks.
- Ability to learn and understand engineering software such as Hydro CAD, HEC-RAS, HY8, Arc-GIS, Storm CAD, and Hydroflow.
- Interest in learning how to use AutoCAD 3D and other engineering software applications.
- Ability to learn and apply City of Charlotte Land Development Standards, NCDOT Standards and Specifications and Charlotte-Mecklenburg Storm Water Design Manual.
- Interest in assisting project managers and engineers in developing construction plans for drainage project repairs and improvements in accordance with all local, state, and federal permitting requirements.
- Efficient time management skills to be applied to short-term project activities and tasks.
- Interest in assisting project managers and engineers with design and management of stormwater projects through the assessment, planning, conceptual, design, and construction phases.
- Good organizational skills that can be applied to engineering activities associated with project design.
- Effective verbal and written communication skills.
- Interest in developing and creating technical reports.
- Ability to work cooperatively with city employees and the public.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Familiar with basic engineering mathematics and geometry skills
Minimum Qualifications:
- Currently enrolled as undergraduate college student with course study in civil engineering/environmental science/civil engineering technology or related curriculum.
