Maintenance Technician I (Sewer)

JOB SUMMARY
This position performs ordinary, labor-intensive tasks commonly related to water and sewer system construction and maintenance. Also assists operator in any way necessary to complete the job. Must be able to work on-call duty. Must be available to respond at any hour during an emergency when requested.
QUALIFICATIONS
EDUCATION, CERTIFICATION & EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- Must possess a valid Class C Driver's License.
- Must possess a valid Texas Class "B" Commercial Driver's License or be able to obtain valid Class B Commercial Driver's permit within 90 days of hire date and obtain Texas Class "B" Commercial Driver's License within one year from hire date.
- Must be able to obtain a Class I sewer collection license and a Class D water license within one year of hire date.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
- One year of experience in Public Works preferred.
- Ability to understand and abide by City of Conroe and Departmental policies and procedures.
- Must be able to work on-call duty and respond at any hour during an emergency when requested.
- Must be able to work as many hours as required to complete jobs.
- Must be able to attend after hours classes to renew or obtain required certifications/licenses when necessary.
- Ability to work as many hours needed to get the work assigned completed.
- Must be able to lift weights up to 100 pounds.
- Ability to understand and follow written and oral instructions.
- Ability to use all tools to accomplish the job in an efficient manner.
- Ability to adapt to new technology, new methods and changing conditions.
- Ability to stand, stoop, kneel, or sit for long periods of time.
- Must be capable of reading, writing and communicating in English.
MACHINES, TOOLS, EQUIPMENT AND WORK AIDES:
Shovels, pickaxes, various hand tools, air tools, boring tools, pumps, metal detectors, line locators, I-PAD
PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT REQUIRED:
Ear and eye protection, boots, gloves, hard hat, self-contained breathing apparatus, atmospheric monitor
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
The work is heavy and requires the ability to exert up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Additionally, the following physical abilities are required: balancing, climbing, crawling, crouching, feeling, fingering, grasping, handling, hearing, kneeling, lifting, mental acuity, pulling, pushing, reaching, repetitive motions, speaking, standing, stooping, talking, visual acuity and walking.
Must pass background check and pre-employment substance abuse screening as a condition of employment. A motor vehicle record check and job-related doctor's physical exam may also be required. Safety-sensitive positions remain subject to random drug and alcohol testing after hire.
