Job Summary:

Category B: Employee with patient care impact. FLSA: Non-exempt

Job Purpose: Under the Direction of the professional staff, assists with patient care to provide support services to the patient, nursing unit, and professional staff.

Supports the mission, vision, values and strategic goals of Methodist Health System.

Education:

High school diploma or GED required

Licenses and/or Certifications (Required and Preferred):

Completion of Patient Care Technician program within 6 months of hire

Healthcare Provider CPR certification required within 1 month of hire

Related Work Experience and Other Skills:

Ability to remain flexible and adaptable to change.

Able to develop and maintain good working relationships with all levels of staff, patients and family members Able to follow oral and written instructions

Demonstrates accountability for own actions. Demonstrates compliance with hospital dress code.

Demonstrates initiative, is a self-starter. Is able to work independently, prioritizing and organizing workload effectively to complete tasks within the time frames delegated.

Demonstrates knowledge of medical terms and names of medications.

Demonstrates understanding of MHS guidelines and reference, Infection Control guidelines, and MHS safety guidelines.

Proactive not reactive, analyzes problems accurately, develops recommendations and takes appropriate actions to solve problems.

Work Experience: No work experience required if currently certified as a nursing or medical assistant

Job Roles:

If specially trained to do, performs additional functions for patients, specifically delineated for assigned unit: Lab specimens collected; appropriately labeled, and delivered to lab in a timely manner, utilizing appropriate safety measures to prevent patient and staff injury; Communicates results of selected tests to professional staff in a timely manner; Conforms to safety standards dictated by regulatory agencies i.e. safety manuals, MSD sheets, OSHA issues.

Documents accurately in electronic health record

Performs patient care activities delegated and supervised by the professional staff: Activities of daily living such as baths, oral hygiene, and oral feedings performed to satisfaction of patient and professional staff; Patient mobility performed (i.e. turning, lifting, moving) utilizing appropriate safety measures to prevent patient and self-injury; Patient meals and nourishments are offered, administered, and recorded in a timely manner; Assists nursing staff with admission, discharge, transfer, and transport of patients.

Respond effectively in emergencies and assists in prevention of patient injury: Initiates CPR when appropriate; Utilizes side rails and restraints to prevent patient injury;

Reports to professional staff patients at increased risk for injury.
