Pay Range

$231,660  - $293,760  Annually

This is the lowest to highest salary we in good faith believe we would pay for this role at the time of this posting; pay will not be below any applicable local minimum wage.  An employee’s position within the salary range will be based on several factors including, but not limited to, specific competencies, relevant education, qualifications, certifications, experience, skills, seniority, geographic location, performance, and business or organizational needs.

This position may offer a hybrid schedule, which includes the flexibility to work from home one or more days per week, after a probationary period. The specifics of the hybrid schedule, including the exact number of days required in the office and virtual work options may vary based on the needs of the team and the organization.

Job Description

We have an opening for an ES&H Integrated Safety Team (IST) Leader supporting the National Ignition Facility (NIF) and Photon Sciences (PS) Directorate to provide leadership for ES&H activities.  You will be responsible for ensuring the flow-down and the implementation of institutional ES&H policies and programs within the NIF&PS programs and line organizations and will provide consultative advice using leading-edge principles, technologies, other best practices. This position will be in the ES&H Integrated Safety Teams Department and matrixed to the Directorate Operations Group in the NIF&PS Deputy Principal Associate Directorate (DPAD).

You will

  • Direct development and implementation of the ES&H Program within NIF&PS, including industrial/construction safety, radiological safety, laser safety, ergonomics, environmental, and chemical/hazardous materials safety.
  • Active management of a broad team of safety professionals and technicians to assure NIF&PS programmatic objectives are achieved safely and that the proper level of attention and resources are applied to minimize safety risks.
  • Establish a team culture that embraces active field presence, customer service, responsiveness, and working in support with program goals.
  • Provide leadership and direction to the IST during emergency response activities and act as ES&H Liaison to the Incident Commander.  
  • Act as key advisor to the DPAD of Operations and the Directorate leadership on Integrated Safety Management implementation, interpreting ES&H policy, and exerting influence in the development of organizational goals ensuring that the directorate activities are consistent with ISM principles.
  • Collaborate with other ES&H leads, functional areas, and ES&H Technician Manager to optimize workload and address staff gap coverage, while minimizing interruption of NIF&PS ES&H support.
  • Evaluate radiological/hazardous activities proposed within NIF&PS and help determine if sufficient expertise is available and if the facility infrastructure is sufficient to manage the activity/hazard. For activities that involve unusual levels of risk (e.g., acutely toxic materials), lead development of an FMEA or “what if” analysis to assure safety is maintained during foreseeable off-normal conditions.
  • Mentor ES&H staff team members, and work with the appropriate Functional Area Managers to assist in career development.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • This position requires an active Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level clearance or active Top Secret clearance issued by another U.S. government agency at the time of hire.
  • Bachelor's degree in science, engineering, ES&H, or related field or the equivalent combination of education and related experience.
  • Substantial experience in ES&H program management in a highly technical organization focusing on diverse, cutting-edge experimental science.
  • Highly Advanced knowledge in radiological safety and one or more ES&H discipline areas:  Industrial Safety, Industrial Hygiene, and Environmental Protection.
