Job Description

AECOM’s Design and Consulting Services-Americas legal department is actively seeking a creative, highly talented attorney to support AECOM’s operations in the Western U.S. This will be a hybrid position including a combination of both remote and in-office, with the expectation to go into the office at least 3 days a week. This role will be based out of Los Angeles, California.  

The appropriately qualified applicant will be able to demonstrate an established career in professional services and construction litigation with a strong understanding of legal issues related to contracts for engineering, construction, and other technical services.

The responsibilities for this position include, but are not limited to:

  • Guidance on risk management and adherence to company policies
  • Review, draft, and negotiate contracts, subcontracts and other legal documents relating to architecture, engineering, construction, environmental, and other services provided by the company to clients in the public and private sectors, including documents related to teaming arrangements, joint ventures, confidentiality agreements, licenses, purchase and sales agreements, insurance, and other matters
  • Act in an advisory capacity making recommendations that may have an important bearing on the conduct of the organization's business
  • Work with management and staff to resolve pre-litigation disputes and potential claims
  • Supervise and manage litigation, including professional liability, breach of contract, and personal injury/wrongful death matters, utilizing outside counsel retained by the company to maximize quality and cost-effectiveness
  • Manage external counsel and litigation budgets
  • Handle subpoenas, document requests, and other litigation related items with limited support staff
  • Prepare and review disclosures to public agencies and support corporate secretary functions
  • Review and conduct research into legislation, cases and legal precedents and emerging government policies to the extent required to address contract-specific or other matters
  • Prepare and review legal memoranda and briefs relating to organizational risks and activities
  • Provide staff with guidance on compliance with federal and provincial laws, statutes and regulations
  • Provide support to multiple offices, and support other team members within the broader West Region as may be necessary based on experience and/or work loads
  • Support the legal department’s goals of diversity, equity and inclusion amongst the legal department, the company and outside vendors.

Qualifications

Minimum Requirements:

  • BA/BS + at least 10 years of relevant experience or demonstrated equivalency of experience and/or education

As well as:

  • J.D. Degree from accredited law school
  • Member in good standing with any U.S. state bar
  • Demonstrated legal experience with a major engineering company, contractor, consultant or law firm in the areas of engineering and construction law
  • Capable of presenting before senior management
  • Capable of working independently with minimal oversight
  • Demonstrated drafting and negotiation experience involving professional services and construction related agreements
  • Proficiency in MS Word, Excel and PowerPoint
  • Ability to travel periodically - approximately 10%

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Prior experience at an engineering, architecture or construction company
  • Well-developed communications skills; ability to clearly and concisely express legal issues and analysis as it pertains to business and technical concerns to executive management, commercial and finance colleagues, technical colleagues and peers
  • Outgoing, personable and a team
