Position Description:

I. Job Summary
The Custodian ensures a clean, safe, and orderly facility by performing routine cleaning, floor care, trash removal, and restroom sanitation. The role maintains entrances and walkways, operates cleaning equipment, follows chemical-use standards, and reports maintenance issues. Responsibilities also include securing doors, organizing supplies, completing required paperwork, and participating in training and meetings.

This position is a “required” personnel position and will require the employee’s physical presence at the workplace.  Additionally, the employee is required to report to (or remain at) work to assist with University emergencies during closures.


II. Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Clean and maintain assigned areas by performing duties such as dusting, waxing, polishing, washing windows, walls, partitions, and woodwork, and removing trash and recyclables. Clean building floors by sweeping, mopping, scrubbing, and/or vacuuming.
  • Bathrooms – Perform thorough general cleaning tasks such as cleaning and disinfecting toilets, urinals, and sinks, cleaning mirrors, sweeping and mopping floors, checking and refilling all dispensers, and emptying garbage receptacles.
  • Safely operate equipment as necessary to perform the job, including upright and backpack vacuum cleaners, buffing machines, scrubbers, wet/dry vacs, upholstery cleaners, carpet shampooers, extractors, floor machines, etc.
  • Keep building entrances and walkways free of ice, snow, and other debris up to 25 feet of the entrance; move and lift furniture and heavy objects up to 25 lbs. and lock/unlock doors.
  • Report damage to structure, facilities, and equipment for repairs/replacement to Work Control or the appropriate supervisor for a work order.
  • Maintain, use, and store appropriate cleaning supplies in custodial carts and closet. Follow the required standards for chemical use.
  • Complete required paperwork, including timecards, white cards, key log, safety sheets, supply requests, and other forms of documentation. 
  • Attend required training and meetings.
  • Performs additional duties as assigned

III. Minimum Requirements

IV. Preferred Qualifications
Prior experience in custodial, janitorial, or facilities maintenance work.
Knowledge of proper cleaning techniques, equipment operation, and chemical‑handling procedures.
Ability to follow safety protocols and maintain compliance with cleaning standards.

V. Competencies
Understands and follows safety protocols, including proper chemical handling, equipment operation, and hazard recognition.
Demonstrates thoroughness in cleaning tasks, ensuring all assigned areas meet cleanliness and safety standards.

VI. Physical Requirements

Frequently works on slippery or uneven surfaces and in wet conditions.
Regular exposure to cleaning chemicals and solvents.
Performs light lifting or carrying up to 25 lbs.
