Senior Corporate Counsel, Intellectual Property

Analog Devices is a world leader in the design, manufacture, and marketing of a broad portfolio of high-performance analog, mixed-signal, and digital signal processing (DSP) integrated circuits (ICs) used in virtually all types of electronic equipment.  Since ADI’s inception in 1965, we have focused on solving the engineering challenges associated with signal processing in electronic equipment. Used by over 100,000 customers worldwide, our signal processing products play a fundamental role in converting, conditioning, and processing real-world phenomena such as temperature, pressure, sound, light, speed, and motion into electrical signals to be used in a wide array of electronic devices.

ADI is seeking an experienced lawyer to serve as Corporate Counsel, Intellectual Property.  This role will report directly to the Head of ADI’s Intellectual Property team and will oversee intellectual property work across designated business units as part of a global IP team.  This role will be based out of ADI’s offices in Limerick, Ireland, and will serve as the in-house expert on European IP matters. 

PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The ideal candidate will have specific experience in European intellectual property law, with some understanding of US intellectual property law, and be capable of leading the development and implementation of IP portfolios for multiple product groups across designated business units, gaining an in-depth understanding of ADI’s business and intellectual property portfolio, and advising the company and its senior leadership regarding the same, on a regular basis.  As part of a collaborative global IP team, this individual will be responsible for supporting product development through proactive IP counseling, for driving the development of IP portfolios, and for delivering clear, concise, and actionable legal advice to ADI’s Engineering Fellows, business leaders and R&D personnel.  The ideal candidate will also have the depth and breadth of skills and experience needed to have responsibility over the following matters:

• Oversee the preparation and prosecution of a global IP portfolio, including the management of outside IP counsel around the world
• Direct and guide the IP deliverables for all stages of product development
• Provide legal counsel, drafting and negotiation of IP agreements, including software licenses.
• Assist with open source software issues, usage reviews and related product clearances
• Consistent with overall IP strategy, lead the development and implementation of IP strategies for assigned product groups
• Assist with affirmative and defensive IP litigation matters in concert with ADI’s Litigation team.
• Manage IP aspects of M&A deals including acquisitions, divestitures, and minority interests.
• Conduct patentability searches
• Manage product releases by initiating IP clearance/freedom-to-operate investigations
• Train and educate business on open source software, invention disclosure processes, patent processes and IP asset management

Qualifications:

• Juris Doctor or in-region equivalent enabling the licensed practice of intellectual law in EMEA.
• License to practice law in at least one U.S. jurisdiction preferred, but not required.
• Registration to practice before the US Patent and Trademark Office and/or other patent offices.
• Bachelors or higher degree in Electrical Engineering.
• 5+ years of experience in patent law, with a mix of in-house and law firm employment.
