About The 2026 SF Fed Summer Internship Program

At the Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco, we are passionate about recognizing and developing emerging talent. Our internship program gives college and graduate students the opportunity to experience work-life in a vibrant, dynamic, and collaborative environment.

Economic Research Intern at the SF Fed

Desired areas of study (but not limited to):
Computer Science, Data Science, Economics, Econometrics, Finance, Math, Public Policy, Statistics

POSITION REQUIREMENTS AND SKILLS LEVERAGED:

  • Critical thinking, data analysis, excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Proficiency in manipulating and presenting data and analyses in Microsoft Excel, Word, and PowerPoint
  • Programming experience in Python, Stata, Matlab or R
  • Superior academic record that includes a strong quantitative background (econometrics, statistics, advanced calculus, or computer programming)
  • An interest in economics or finance is essential; interest in pursuing a Ph.D. in Economics is not required, but preferred
  • Ability to work independently and with a team
  • Ability to prioritize and balance multiple projects
  • Effective interpersonal and behavioral competencies such as collaboration, innovation, and leadership

ABOUT OUR GROUP
Our Economic Research Department is a center for innovative thinking about all aspects of the domestic and global economy. Our staff members conduct high caliber research and provide in-depth and independent analysis to help support the Bank’s monetary policy, supervision, and public information responsibilities. Our research and analysis reach a wide and varied audience through publication in top academic journals, other external publications, and web products that cover cutting-edge topics for the general public and specialized audiences. Our work is frequently cited in the media and used as educational resources.
 

WHAT WILL YOU DO THIS SUMMER?
Research Analyst interns will use skills such as critical thinking, data analysis, written and verbal communication to collaborate with economists and research associates on quantitative research analysis using economic and financial data. This is an exceptional opportunity for interns to work closely with economists at the top of their fields on a variety of research questions and real-world policy issues.

Program Eligibility

  • Full-time undergraduate or graduate students currently enrolled in an accredited community college, four-year college, or university with an expected graduation date between December 2026 – June 2028
  • U.S. Citizen or Permanent Residency
  • Keen interest in public service, and the overall mission-driven work of the SF Fed
  • Demonstrated leadership ability
  • Ability to work 40 hours per week for the full duration of the 10.5-week internship
  • Ability to work 5 days per week in-office

Salary range for internship roles (based on position/experience/location):
$20.50 - $35.50/hourly
