There’s no organization quite like the Theodore Roosevelt Medora Foundation (TRMF). We’re a premiere tourism operation—and we’re a 501c(3) non-profit. TRMF was established in 1986—but our story begins before that. In 1962, nationally renowned businessman Harold Schafer took an interest in a historic old town named Medora. He loved its history, its striking location, and its potential to inspire others. So, he began revitalizing the old town: he restored a historic hotel, brought the Medora Musical to town, and so much more.

It was 1986 when the Schafer family, with Harold ready to retire from business, donated all they’d created in Medora to establish the non-profit Theodore Roosevelt Medora Foundation.

In the years since, we’ve grown from a staff of a handful of folks to more than 50 full-time employees, with hundreds more seasonal workers and over 650 volunteers. We’ve awarded hundreds of thousands of dollars’ worth of scholarships to our staff. The Medora Musical has earned the attention of The New York Times. And we’ve earned a reputation as the #1 tourism and hospitality provider in North Dakota.

 Bully Pulpit is a nationally acclaimed 18-hole, par 72 daily fee golf course designed by Dr. Michael Hurdzan. We are located on the I-94 corridor in the Scenic and historic Badlands of North Dakota along the Little Missouri River, just 3 miles south of Historic Medora, ND. The golf course measures 7,166 yards from the Championship tees, but has four other sets to choose from. Greens are grassed with Seaside II creeping bentgrass, and the tees, fairways, and roughs are mixture of Kentucky Blues and Fine Fescues. Modern equipment fleet of Toro and John Deere units.

Summary/Objective  

Under the supervision of the Superintendent, the Assistant Superintendent evaluates turf management and determines appropriate methods of resolving issues, assists in reviewing and evaluating current procedures, and assists in developing short and long-range goals to ensure efficient maintenance and operation of the Bully Pulpit Golf Course. 

Duties/Responsibilities 

Assists the Superintendent in planning and organizing the work 

Assists in overseeing the grounds maintenance operations of the Bully Pulpit Golf Course. 

Assists in managing, coordinating, and planning grounds maintenance work by preparing regular schedules for irrigation, mowing, fertilization pesticide application, and other turf and grass cultural practices. 

Assists in in planning and scheduling work for assigned golf course seasonal personnel to ensure proper distribution of maintenance duties. 

Train staff on proper equipment operation, established procedures and techniques sot that staff are aware of how to properly perform assigned tasks. 

Assist with promoting and enforcing safety practices in accordance with local, state and federal regulations. Assists in training of employees in safety procedures and internal procedures. 

Assists in supervising seasonal personnel functions to include hiring, promotion, and transfer recommendations. 

Identifies turf grass disease, weed types, and insect types, and determines the appropriate chemical application strategy for resolving the issue. 

Determines the proper formulas and applications of fungicides and pesticides through understanding of fertilizer and chemicals formulas. 

Assists in supervising and performing maintenance and repairs of Bully Pulpit Golf Course equipment, including establish records and assisting in monitoring the inventory of all equipment and tools. 

Assists in developing short and long-range goals to ensure the efficient maintenance operation of the Bully Pulpit Golf Course. 

Assists in annual budget preparation and maintaining records. 

Assists in reviewing and evaluating current procedures and makes recommendations to increase efficiency, productivity and reduce operating costs. 

Perform other related duties as necessary or assigned.
