About the role

Orion is recruiting an Estimator for our Houston office. Seeking a talented Estimator with 8+ years' experience working in Marine Construction and/or Heavy Civil Construction. This position is accountable for the preparation of estimates, takeoffs, and gathering information required for project proposals.  Activities of the incumbent include working closely with the project team(s) to ensure success in the bid proposal and ward process.

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Reports to and works closely with the VP of Operations and the Project Management Team to help ensure success in the bid estimation process for marine construction projects.
  • Leads efforts to develop comprehensive plan and timetable to complete project estimates that may be assigned.
  • Conducts investigation of potential project site accompanied by job sponsor.
  • Prepares listing of bid items for review by the Project Management Team.
  • Performs quantity surveys to develop a basis for cost estimates.    
  • Contacts all material suppliers and subcontractors involved in a given project and solicits quotations on needed bid items.
  • Collects all quotations and enters data into the project management information system regarding quote and survey information.
  • Organizes estimates, quotations, notes, plans, and other pertinent data for final pre-bid review and leads discussion of individual bid items.
  • Assists in the review and analysis of bid documents for items relating to project risk, cost, or company capability.   
  • Prepares all bid documents and arranges in work sheet form.
  • Assists in the establishment of proper sequencing of construction, labor requirements, and productivity.
  • Supervises preparation of man-hours and unit production for the various items in the project.     
  • Maintains and updates vendor files for various construction materials and subcontractors.   
  • Participates in Safety and Environmental initiatives that will contribute to compliance of State/Federal regulations and improve existing Company programs.

POSITION REQUIREMENTS

 

A minimum of eight (8) years estimating experience in marine/heavy civil construction or a related industry is required.  Ideally, the incumbent must have familiarization with Project Estimating, Marine Construction Materials, Procurement, Construction Estimating to include HCSS/HeavyBid, Scheduling (P6), Project Tracking Software, Cost Control, Project Standards, and Safety & Environmental Compliance.  A B.S. Degree in Civil Engineering/Construction Management or related discipline is preferred.

 

The incumbent must be qualified and physically able to drive regular passenger vehicles to visit work locations and potential project areas; must maintain a current passport; possess excellent computer skills; and have the ability to interface well with employees at all levels of the organization.
