Where you will work: This position offers a hybrid work option (up to 50% remote) and is open to any Compeer office location in Illinois, Minnesota and Wisconsin.
The contributions you will make:
This position provides legal counsel, advice, analysis, and support on a wide range of matters for the organization. Educates leadership and team members in legal and compliance matters, thus reducing dependency on outside law firms. Effectively manages and resolves legal issues which confront the organization.
A typical day:
Regulatory Legal Advice and Contract Law
- Serves as primary legal counsel to the organization’s consumer mortgage lending division and to other business units on regulatory compliance matters
- Maintains significant subject-matter expertise in the law of consumer and small business lending, including the Truth in Lending Act, RESPA, and Regulation Z; the Home Mortgage Disclosure Act and Regulation C; Fair Credit Reporting Act and Regulation V; the Equal Credit Opportunity Act and Regulation B; SAFE Act; UDAAP; federal laws and regulations affecting correspondent lending and mortgage loan brokering; and regulatory compliance management.
- Monitors, researches, analyzes and provides advice on existing and proposed industry trends, regulatory compliance, new laws and policies and their impact on the organization. Drafts legal opinions on complex areas of law pertinent to the organization.
- Drafts internal documents, including memoranda outlining and analyzing the facts and legal issues involved in a matter.
- May review marketing materials to ensure regulatory compliance.
- Answers questions and provides guidance to team members on various legal and compliance topics.
- Ensures the organization’s loan documents and other client-facing contract templates comply with federal and state law and the organization’s policies.
- Negotiates, drafts and interprets contracts and other legal documents, between the organization and third parties, concerning loans, leases, insurance and other related matters in compliance with legal, regulatory and organizational policies.
Compliance Management and Training
- Serves as primary legal counsel to the organization’s regulatory compliance team.
- Provides guidance on risks resulting from violations of legal, regulatory, or contractual obligations and conformance with the organization’s policies and procedures involve legal and compliance matters.
- Provides consultation and training to Compliance team members regarding changes in regulations that affect Compeer’s Compliance Program and policies and procedures.
- Partners with business leaders and provides training and direction to team members on a wide range of legal and compliance topics.
- Assists leadership in defining the legal team’s strategic direction and goals.
- Keeps abreast of industry best practices. Identifies and executes efficient and effective practices that enhance the team’s value.
The skills and experience we prefer you have:
- Bachelor’s degree and a Juris Doctorate from an American Bar Association accredited law school.
