Reporting to the Vice President & Dean for Campus Life, the Interim Associate Dean for Campus Life provides leadership and strategic direction for multiple areas within campus life, working to facilitate a strong and vibrant residential and campus community. The Interim Associate Dean will ensure that student support services facilitated through student housing, community standards, student engagement, and campus centers are congruent with Emerson’s mission and vision and that students' voices are reflected in the college's services and policies. The Interim Associate Dean is charged with building trusting relationships and gaining the confidence of the college community's students, faculty, and staff stakeholders. They are expected to be a consensus builder, effective both as an advocate and champion of students and the student experience.

Leadership and Strategic Direction

  • Provides leadership in planning, implementing, evaluating, and modifying multiple student service programs, processes, and operations related to assigned areas of responsibility; interprets and applies federal and state mandated guidelines. Plans, implements, administers, and evaluates related projects and services impacting the college.
  • Develops and implements improvements to services and programs for the college, which involves working closely with staff and faculty to appropriately identify student needs.
  • Serves as the lead crisis management person for the division, participating in the Emergency Response Team and supporting members of the President’s Council as needed.
  • Provides constant support and expertise to the on-call duty rotation to ensure a well-coordinated response during crisis and high-profile situations.

Campus Community Building

  • Represents the division of student affairs/campus life to various institutional divisions, committees, students and their parents, and/or the general public.
  • Engages in synergistic partnership with the AVP for the Office of Equal Opportunity and the AVP for Campus Life to coordinate processes related to Title IX. Works closely with the Emerson College Police Department in maintaining Clery Act violation records for the campus.
  • Represents their areas on the Care, Assistance, and Support Team (CAST) and SAFE (threat assessment) team.

Student Experience

  • Develops practices and approaches to create a welcoming and caring sense of place within the campus environment where students can grow and develop during their time at Emerson.
  • Incorporates diverse, inclusive, and socially just practices to promote student success as it relates to the work done within the Associate Dean’s areas.
  • Assesses campus life programs and operations, utilizing data-driven approaches to evaluate effectiveness, identify areas for improvement, and implement strategic enhancements that enrich the overall student experience.
  • Partners with appropriate college staff to support the overall student experience (Student Accessibility Services, Emerson Wellness Center, Office of Equal Opportunity, Campus Services, Healing and Advocacy Collective, Student Accounts, Emerson College PD, etc.).
  • Collaborates with the Director of Student Care and Support to help provide students with clear and direct access to resources and support networks.

Operational Management

  • Supervises the Director of Housing & Residential Education to develop and implement a comprehensive residential program that focuses on fostering a dynamic and inclusive campus community.
  • Supervises the Director of Student Engagement & Leadership to develop an active and engaged campus community. Supports the operation of the campus centers (Piano Row, 172 Tremont, Student Performance Center) to ensure they meet the growing needs of the campus community.
  • Supervises the Associate Director for Community Standards to develop and deliver an educational and fair conduct process.

Community Standards and Student Conduct

  • Manages the community standards and student conduct process.
  • Develops fair and equitable processes for responding to violations of college policy.
  • Develops programs to educate the campus about responsible and ethical behavior.
  • Stay current on student conduct trends and appropriate state and federal regulations, and be grounded in current practices that result in high levels of consistency and accountability.
