About the role

Want to help everyday Americans build wealth? Financial inequality is increasing and too many people are getting left behind. At Stash, we believe in the power of simplifying investing, making it easy and affordable for everyday Americans to build wealth and achieve their financial goals.

We’re one of the fastest growing fintechs in the U.S. and have had another record-breaking year. In 2021 we almost doubled our headcount and valuation. Our personal finance app makes investing easy and affordable; this year 6 million customers set aside more than $3 billion with Stash.

Prioritizing People is one of our core values and has been key to a healthy work-life balance and a great sense of fulfillment and inclusion. We employ a true people first - hybrid model. Live and work where you feel the most productive, whether that is in your home, in an office, or a combination of both. Anywhere in the US or UK.

Let’s solve complex problems and tackle wealth inequality.

As the Fraud Rules and Data Manager, you must love digging into the details and have a passion for deriving data-driven insights. You will be responsible for creating and tuning Fraud rule sets using a combination of trend analysis and industry knowledge, determining relevant data attributes and application of those attributes to internal models and other tools. You will continue to enhance and iterate on rule sets to adapt to changing priorities and patterns, pulling in data from external tools to enhance our understanding of the customer.

This role requires being both proactive and reactive - understanding what we need to get ahead of while adapting to real-time issues. Though most of your time will be in the rules and the data, you will have opportunities to interface with other teams (Data Science, Product, Customer Experience, Compliance, etc.) to align with broader company initiatives. In order to be successful, this hire will be a detail-oriented person who has experience deriving insights from individual transaction sets and broader trends then creating structure from that insight. (This role reports to the Director of Fraud Strategy.)

What you’ll do:

  • Build and adjust rule sets to optimize fraud detection while limiting negative impact to good customers
  • Determine data attributes that will help inform dynamic rule set and modeling effectiveness
  • Source, test, and validate external vendors to supplement internal tools and data
  • Work with fraud associates to surface trends and develop subsequent rules to mitigate loss
  • Liaise with Customer Service team to understand impact of fraud rules on user experience
  • Work with Analytics and Data Engineering to ensure all available indicators are accessible by the rules engine(s) and data is consistent
  • Analyze and find patterns in intra-Stash transaction volume
  • Collaborate and closely work with banking and investing partners to align on data availability and significance

What we’re looking for:

  • A passion for Fraud (and lifelong learning)
  • Enthusiasm for getting in the weeds and chasing leads “down the rabbit hole”
  • Minimum of 3+ years of Fraud experience, including direct experience identifying exposures or trends along with the adjustments to address them
  • Minimum of 3+ years in banking, payments, consumer finance, or similar industries
  • Minimum of 2+ years in data analytics, data science, or modeling with direct experience querying in SQL, Looker, Python, R, or other database tool
  • Payments, credit, banking, or credit card fraud detection experience preferred
  • Previous experience at a start-up or in a highly regulated industry
  • Experience deriving rules from raw data, forming workflows, and adjusting fraud rules accordingly
  • Experience reporting on rule effectiveness
  • Experience working cross-functionally, particularly with Analytics teams
  • Experience with third-party tools used for identity verification, device authentication and fraud detection
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Capacity to communicate efficiently and effectively with internal and external stakeholders
  • Commitment to process improvement and operational excellence

Bonus points:

  • Knowledge of ACH returns, chargebacks
  • KYC/CIPs knowledge and experience
