About the role

Description

We are welcoming candidates for a Design and Technical Production Specialist in the Department of Theatre Arts. Gordon College invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track assistant or associate professor appointment with the opportunity to teach in undergraduate education. Position to begin August 2018. Rank will be commensurate with experience.

 

The theatre arts program at Gordon College is characterized by a rigorous pursuit of artistic excellence in a collaborative and supportive environment that encourages creativity, exploration and growth. Principal teaching responsibilities will include undergraduate technical theatre and design courses (one per semester), designing one element (scenic, lighting or costume) per semester for department productions and supervising the designers and build for all other productions (1-3 annually). Faculty responsibilities include advising students, supervising student apprentices and workers, overseeing theatre performance, building and storage spaces, and faculty assignment on college committees.

 

The Department of Theatre Arts at Gordon College is composed of 2 full-time faculty with regular adjunct instructors in various specialties (voice, movement and physical theatre, for example). Our program is known for its emphasis on artistic quality, dynamic collaboration and the encouragement of professional entrepreneurial skills. We know our students well and invest significant time in their personal and artistic growth. Our productions are noted for their high quality, depth and range, from classics to contemporary works, from ensemble devisings to traditional musicals, from vibrant revivals to innovative new plays.

 

Graduates of Gordon College’s Theatre Arts program create and produce theatre in professional, educational and community settings. They include equity actors, artistic program directors, stage managers, designers, children’s theatre performers, studio teachers, devising creators, filmmakers, writers and technicians.

Qualifications

The idea candidate will have:

  • terminal degree or MA with significant professional theatre experience required; academic and professional experience preferred
  • demonstrated expertise in at least one design area (scenic, lighting or costume preferred)
  • passion for working with undergraduate theatre artists
  • strong artistic vision and collaborative spirit
  • supervisory experience, good communication and organizational skills
  • knowledge of theatre equipment and safe theatrical practices including lighting, carpentry, rigging, stagecraft and sound
  • knowledge of hand drafting and ability to read architectural plans; knowledge of Audo-Cad and Vectorworks
  • strong personal motivation, high energy
  • commitment to ongoing artistic development and growth, research in some area related to technical production and / or design
  • commitment to Christian liberal arts and educational values
