Position Summary

As BMS Oncology evolves toward a more targeted, biomarker-driven portfolio, it is critical to maintain deep, sustained engagement across the global oncology ecosystem to inform and shape long-range portfolio strategy.

The Senior Director, Strategic Alliances is an enterprise level leadership role within Global Oncology Medical Affairs with end-to-end accountability for the oncology external engagement ecosystem.  This role sets the overarching vision, operating model and enterprise priorities for strategic oncology alliances, spanning medical/professional societies, academic centers and global thought leader networks across the BMS portfolio.

The Senior Director oversees a team of 5 and acts as a central architect, ensuring a strategic partnership approach to how we engage the external oncology ecosystem. The role serves as a senior enterprise integrator across Medical Affairs, R&D, Commercial, and Medical Communications, aligning external partnerships to long‑range oncology strategy, development priorities, and lifecycle needs.  This role represents Oncology Medical Affairs and the broader BMS enterprise as a senior external leader with key global partners and societies.

Key Responsibilities

  • Define and continuously evolve the enterprise oncology alliance vision and operating model, ensuring alignment with long range portfolio, development, and commercialization strategy.

  • Establish governance, prioritization frameworks, success metrics, and investment principles across all oncology alliances.

  • Ensure disciplined portfolio level decision‑making regarding where BMS engages, how deeply, and to what strategic end.

  • Serve as the senior enterprise lead for engagement with oncology medical and professional societies, shaping BMS’s long‑term partnership strategy and scientific presence.

  • Ensure insights from alliances are integrated at enterprise decision points (e.g., portfolio prioritization, MEG, CDP, GPT) with clear executive‑level framing, informing investment decisions and long range planning.

  • Lead, mentor, and develop a high‑performing team of alliance leaders, fostering strategic thinking, external credibility, and enterprise mindset.

  • Build scalable capabilities, tools, and best practices that enable consistent, high‑impact alliance execution.

Qualifications & Experience

  • Advanced scientific degree (PhD, MD, PharmD) required; additional business or strategy experience strongly preferred.

  • 12+ years of experience in oncology medical affairs, R&D, portfolio strategy, alliance leadership, or related enterprise roles.

  • Demonstrated experience leading leaders and managing complex, multi‑layered teams.

  • Proven ability to operate at enterprise scale, influencing senior executives across functions.

  • Recognized credibility with external oncology leaders, academic institutions, and professional societies.

  • Deep understanding of oncology development, biomarkers, lifecycle strategy, and decision‑making frameworks.
