General purpose: Reporting to the Studio Manager, Digital Fabrication Studio, the Digital Fabrication Studio Technician assists with the general operational functions of the Digital Fabrication Studio with a particular focus on the advancement of safety, equipment, and facilities in the shop.  Under the guidance of the Studio Manager, this position provides technical expertise to students and faculty through curricular engagement and co-curricular initiatives. The Digital Fabrication Studio Shop is a campus-wide resource open to all MICA students (undergraduate, graduate, and open studies students).

Summary of Essential Functions

  • Supervise student homework access to the Digital Fabrication Studio Shop and support fall and spring instruction.

  • Assist with the day-to-day operations and maintenance of the Digital Fabrication Studio Shop, ensuring that all equipment operates effectively and safely, the facilities are clean and efficient, and supplies are stocked and available.

  • Support Undergraduate and Graduate students regarding related processes of the Digital Fabrication Studio Shop. 


  • Provide assistance to the Digital Fabrication Studio Manager. 


Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Provide technical support to students in the Digital Fabrication Studio Shop 


  • Communicate, maintain, and enforce a safety program that complies with Office of Environmental Health and Safety (EHS), OSHA standards and best practices within the Digital Fabrication Studio Shop 

  • Enforce studio policies and demonstrate the safe and appropriate use of equipment, tools, materials, techniques, and processes in the Digital Fabrication Studio Shop

  • Provide assistance and guidance to any Digital Fabrication Studio Shop student workers (student technicians and/or work-study)

  • Assist with monitoring and maintaining all tools and equipment in the Digital Fabrication Studio Shop.  Ensure tools and equipment are operating with the highest level of functionality and safety, while making repairs as necessary.

  • Assist with the management and organization of the physical departmental space, and operation of equipment

  • Contribute to tutorials for processes and techniques used in the Digital Fabrication Studio Shop

  • Help maintain supplies for the Digital Fabrication Studio Shop by communicating with the Studio Manager

  • Perform other related duties as assigned

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Practical working experience with laser cutting, 3D printing, and CNC Milling

  • Knowledge of 3D software for computer aided design, and computer aided machining

  • Good mechanical sensibility

  • Ability to assess and trouble-shoot digital fabrication equipment

  • Strong listening and organizational skills, ability to communicate professionally both orally and in writing 

  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work collaboratively with a diverse group of faculty, staff and students

  • Demonstrated knowledge of Microsoft Office, Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator 

Minimum qualifications:

  • BFA, or a four-year degree with experience working in a digital fabrication studio

  • 1+ years’ experience working with 3D modeling and CAM software

  • 1+ years’ experience operating 3D printers, laser cutters, and CNC mills/routers

Preferred Qualifications:

  • 2+ years’ experience working with 3D modeling and CAM software

  • 2+ years’ experience operating and maintaining 3D printers, laser cutters, and CNC mills/routers

  • 1+ years’ experience working as a technician in a digital fabrication studio, preferably in an academic environment

  • Experience working with Universal Laser Cutters, Prusa 3d printers, and CNC routers

  • Skills in Rhino, RhinoCAM, and Grasshopper

  • Knowledge of electronics and experience working with Arduino or CircuitPython

  • Knowledge of programing/scripting languages such as Python, Processing, or C

  • Experience building 3D printers and other digital fabrication machinery

Reporting to this position:

  • No direct reports

Salary: Hiring Range from ($20.22 - $24.73) hourly commensurate with experience
