JOB SUMMARY:  Assumes responsibility for the technical operations of a specific laboratory section. Ensures that all procedures are performed as defined in section policy and procedure manuals. Leads the work of Medical Lab Techs and Medical Technologists and acts as the subject matter expert for the department.

 

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:  Associate’s degree in medical laboratory technology or biological sciences field from an accredited institution with three years of directly related, full time clinical laboratory experience required.  Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution in Medical Laboratory Technology or related biological sciences field with one year relevant clinical laboratory experience preferred.

 

LICENSURE, CERTIFICATION, and/or REGISTRATION:  Certificate from appropriate professional agency (ASCP, NCA, HEW or AMT) or certificate eligible preferred but not required.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  1. Leads the work of Medical Lab Techs and Medical Technologists.
  2. Acts as the subject matter expert for the department.
  3. Reviews the work assigned to members of the section for proper reporting and completion.
  4. Functions as a bench technologist when workload warrants.
  5. Reviews relevant laboratory reports for extraordinary results and clerical errors before they are reported to the patient’s medical record, including reports on procedures processed by reference laboratories.
  6. Maintains, improves, and continually checks the accuracy of test methods and instruments in the section.
  7. Participates in research, development, and writing policies and new protocols for new and changed procedures.
  8. Maintains adequate supply of materials in the section.
  9. Ensures that new personnel and students are properly trained.
  10. Participates in cost analysis of existent and prospective test procedures.
  11. Continually strives to improve the section as needed and possible.
  12. Maintains a professional atmosphere in the section.
  13. Cooperates with other sections for the benefit of the total lab.
  14. Performs all other reasonable duties assigned by the section supervisor.

 

SKILLS/QUALIFICATIONS:

Demonstrates ability to work effectively with others.

Demonstrates initiative in tackling and resolving departmental problems, both technical and procedural.

Demonstrates ability to perform medial laboratory procedures effectively and in accordance with the policies and protocols in effect
