Associate Director for Latin American, Caribbean & Iberian Studies

Job Summary:

The Associate Director of Latin American, Caribbean & Iberian Studies (LACIS) is responsible for overseeing the implementation and monitoring of strategic planning initiatives at LACIS to ensure appropriate use of financial, administrative, and staffing resources in alignment with the strategic plan, including exercising supervisory authority. The Associate Director also oversees the grant writing and the implementation of any grant-funded programs through Title IV funding, private foundations that support the center, and any additional institutions identified for strategic growth and development.

In addition to these administrative tasks, the Associate Director serves as the unit liaison to internal and external stakeholder groups providing organizational information and representing the interests of the unit, including program outreach priorities that align with the strategic vision of the center outside of campus. This work requires regular consultation with LACIS faculty, staff, teachers, and students to develop initiatives, outreach opportunities, and programming that appeal to the diverse audiences LACIS serves. It also means maintaining close communication and relationships with strategic partners off campus. With this, a long-term focus of the Associate Director is to formulate program strategies and goals, direct long-term planning for the center, develop policies and procedures, and establish and maintain the health of program activities and strategic initiatives.

Responsibilities:

Provides classroom, online, and/or laboratory instruction associated with more than one lecture or laboratory course. Assists with the design and execution of administrative functions associated with academic instruction and the development of pedagogy/andragogy or assessment tools and resources to support quality student learning. Provides for-credit instruction in formats such as classroom, online and/or laboratory settings, including grading. Serves as an instructor of record.

• 10% Provides classroom, online, and/or laboratory instruction, including grading
• 5% Supervises the day-to-day activities of work unit employees involved in instructional support as needed
• 10% Develops grant proposals for instructional development and may serve as principal or co-principal investigator on grants to develop new teaching methods in the discipline. May administer budget and personnel for instructional grants and programs
• 55% Assists in defining the objectives of the program and plays a major role in carrying out program duties
• 5% Advises unit director on instructional budget and personnel decisions
• 5% Directs, implements, and monitors strategic planning initiatives to ensure appropriate use of financial, administrative, and staffing resources in alignment with the strategic plan, including exercising supervisory authority. 
• 5% Consults with faculty, staff, teachers, and students to develop programming for diverse audiences. Formulates program strategies and goals, directs long-term planning, develops policies and procedures, and establishes and maintains program activities
• 5% Serves as the unit liaison to internal and external stakeholder groups providing organizational information and representing the interests of the unit, including program outreach priorities

Tasks:

• Build and maintain campus partnerships that advance the program's academic and professional excellence in all programs
• Maintain successfully renew appropriate federal, state and local grants and accreditations.
• Convene and participate in weekly staff meetings
• Introduce guest speakers and facilitate weekly lecture series.
• Monitor expenses on the grants and endowments and works with financial specialist to keep records current and prepare reports.
• Prepare agenda and minutes of meetings of the unit's committees.
• Participate in campus wide committee meetings as appropriate.
• Conduct advising meetings with students affiliated to the program as appropriate.
• Prepare and deliver classes for undergraduate and graduate students.
• Participate in graduate student committees as appropriate.
• Maintain contact with partners at the University of Wisconsin - Milwaukee regarding shared federal grant.
• Revise and support the program outreach priorities.
• Work with partners in other universities with Latin American Studies programs to devise collaborative mechanisms on less commonly taught languages.
• Maintain contact with and support and promote research of the affiliated faculty.
