Position Overview
The Illinois Department of Corrections is looking for a motivated organized individual to become part of the business office/mailroom at the Vandalia Correctional Center. The candidate will perform clerical functions in the supervision and operation of the mailroom. The individual will process all incoming and outgoing mail for the facility. Essential Functions
- Processes and inspects all incoming and outgoing individuals in custody mail.
- Directs distribution of all incoming Institutional mail.
- Receives and distributes all privileged and legal correspondence, special letters, and packages.
- Daily review and monitoring of electronic communications and postage needs.
- Responds to individuals in custody and staff regarding various mail issues and mailroom procedures.
- Serves as working supervisor.
- Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably withing the scope of those enumerated above.
Minimum Qualifications
- Requires knowledge, skill and mental development equivalent to completion of high school and two (2) years of office experience; or two (2) years of independent business experience.
- Requires the ability to keyboard accurately at 30 words per minute.
- Qualifying state employees, in the employee Upward Mobility Program, may complete combinations of specific proficiency tests and training programs leading to a certificate of proficiency in lieu of the stated requirements for this classification.
Preferred Qualifications
- Prefers at least two (2) years of experience working with office practices, procedures, and programs.
- Prefers extensive knowledge of composition, grammar, spelling, and punctuation as compared to the completion of high school.
- Prefers extensive knowledge of basic mathematics as compared to completion of high school.
- Prefers at least two (2) years of experience working with computer programs.
- Prefers at least two (2) years of experience multitasking and prioritizing workload to meet deadlines.
- Prefers at least two (2) years of experience doing record keeping and filing.
- Prefers at least two (2) years of experience operating commonly used manual and automated office equipment.
