PT TRIO/SSS Written & Oral Communications Tutor

The TRIO Student Support Services program at Ivy Tech Richmond is currently seeking qualified applicants to tutor participating students with courses related to written and oral communications.

• Provide individual and group tutoring for TRIO students by walk-in or scheduled appointments. These appointments will be either in person or virtual.
• Create a professional and welcoming environment by modeling respect for students’ diverse cultures, language skills, ability and experience
• Provide subject-specific content to help students
• Clarify course content
• Utilize listening and questioning strategies as the primary tutoring method to diagnose student needs and monitor progress
• Recognize the different learning styles and student preferences
• Support students in the development of appropriate research and study strategies
• Use feedback and reflection to improve practice
• Recognize primary role to help students become more confident, more successful and self-directed learners
• Maintain and submit weekly reports of services provided
• Report to the TRIO program information about student progress

Hours per week & Pay rate

• 3 to 12 hours per week (depends on tutoring needs) at $15 per hour

Minimum Qualifications

• Must provide evidence of proficiency in English Composition, a Communications course (Public Speaking, Interpersonal Communication. or Workplace Communications), and/ or a Humanities or behavioral Social Science course as indicated by earning an A or B in the course.
• Must have a minimum of a 3.0 cumulative GPA or higher.
• Must attend a TRIO Student Support Services training session
• Show sensitivity to the needs of disadvantaged populations
• Demonstrate an ability to interact effectively with diverse population
• Must commit to regular availability during established hours Monday-Thursday 9 am to 7 pm

Preferred Qualifications

• Proficiency in 200 level or higher English course
• Proficiency in a 200 level or higher Communications course
• Bilingual is a plus.
