As an Amentum Space Exploration Division (ASED) intern, you will work alongside engineers and scientists on hardware development, payload integration & operations, laboratory & test operations, modeling & simulation, space environments, scientific research and propulsion systems for programs like Human Landing Systems, Space Launch Systems and the International Space Station!

The Non-Metallic Materials and Space Environment Effects team in the Amentum Space Exploration Division is looking for a Materials Engineering - Intern to join our facility on Marshall Space and Flight Center in Huntsville, Alabama. This position will be located in the Thermal Protection System facility and will be responsible for supporting the facility in the development, testing and implementation of Thermal Protection Systems, structural adhesives and aerospace-grade coatings. You’ll work with a cross-functional team of engineers and technicians in both laboratory and manufacturing environments to help apply, qualify and troubleshoot mission-critical materials used in extreme environments.

Responsibilities:

  • Prepare and characterize material samples following ASTM and internal procedures.

  • Observe and assist with the production of processes for thermal protection foams, adhesives, and paint systems.

  • Document and analyze test results to support engineering evaluations and materials selections.

  • Work alongside engineers and technicians to troubleshoot application or processing issues.

  • Support root cause analysis and failure investigations on materials and bonded assemblies.

  • Support process validation, quality control, and material traceability efforts.

  • Aid in data collection, reporting, and presentation of test results to engineering stakeholders.

  • Participate in developing and revising work instructions, material handling procedures, and safety documentation.

Expectations included in the ASED Internship:

  • You are expected to have a valid driver’s license, have access to an automobile, and be able to drive yourself to work locations.

  • You will be expected to attend MSFC facility scheduled tours, Technical Fellow talks, luncheons, and training sessions in addition to your work.

  • We highly encourage you to participate in activities outside of work with your fellow interns. These activities will be scheduled, with your input, by your social coordinators and will be beneficial in forming a cohesive group and lasting friendships.

Qualifications:

Pursuing a B.S. in Materials Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or a related field is required. Attendance at an ABET accredited institution is desired. Must be able to provide own transportation. Proper ‘STAR-ID’ driver’s license for registration and admittance to Redstone Arsenal is required.

  • Basic understanding of polymers, adhesives, coatings, or thermal protection systems.

  • Hands-on lab experience with materials testing or preparation is a plus.

  • Strong organizational and document skills.

  • Able to work independently and in a team in a technical environment.

  • Interest in aerospace, defense, or high-performance materials applications.

Work Environment:

Office and lab environment. Requires ability to provide clear, concise, accurate and timely communication, both verbally and in writing (100%). Requires ability to interact professionally with co-workers, management, and client (100%). Requires travel in the domestic USA (<5%).

Physical Requirements:

Requires sitting for extended periods of time in meetings with peers, management, and with our client at NASA facilities to discuss technical issues (10%). Also, requires sitting for extended periods of time at a desk to write reports and perform engineering tasks (80%). Requires ability to use stairs or elevators for access between floors and multiple buildings and test stands at NASA and Amentum facilities (10%).

Equipment and Machines:

Requires ability to operate a personal computer, a telephone, fax machine, copier, calculator, and other general office equipment (100%).

Attendance:

Normal workday is from 7:00 a.m. through 4:00 p.m., Monday thru Friday. Minimal overtime may be required (10%) to meet schedule milestones and to support technical demands of the job. Regular attendance is a necessity and adequate arrangements for delegating duties during absences are required.
