About the role

Overview

Collects quality blood samples from patients of all ages. Performs a variety of clerical duties, as well as a wide range of customer service-related functions. Acts as a preceptor to trainees and new team members.

Responsibilities

  • Independently obtains blood specimens from patients. Identifies patients and labels specimens following departmental procedure.
  • Maintains knowledge of complex specimen requirements, and follows the correct order of draw based on tube type and special handling of tests. Utilizes proper resources for obtaining specimen requirement information.
  • Performs various assigned functions related to demographic data, test requisitioning, keyboarding, data entry, updating, uploading, making encounters and printing of files labels and reports.
  • Retrieves and provides data.
  • Responds to radio and text pages and collects samples from patients as designated.
  • Maintains and tracks patient wait times.
  • Utilizes the pneumatic tube system (PTS) or hand carries specimens to the Laboratory.
  • Completes and processes a variety of forms, as dictated by the department. Obtains pre-authorizations and patient signatures.
  • Prepares specimens for in-lab testing or off-site shipment. Processes specimens that require special handling according to established procedures or protocols.
  • Resolves problems as they arise, keeping leadership apprised of the situation.
  • Serves as preceptor for orienting and training new trainees and team members.
  • Supervises trainees, as needed, during hand-on practicum. Supports the training program by instructing trainees, administering and grading quizzes.
  • Ensures blood drawing stations are clean and well stocked.
  • Performs other duties as required or assigned.
  • Qualifications

    • High school graduate or the equivalent required.
    • Certified phlebotomist and trained preceptor, with greater than 18 months phlebotomy experience.
    • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills required.
    • Proven work experience with the public.
    • Strong computer ability desired.
    • Applicant must be honest, dependable, able to multi-task, and be detail oriented.

    Required Licensure/Certifications

    • BLS certification required within 30 days of hire.
    • Certification as Phlebotomy Technician – PBT required within 6 months of hire date. Issuing source American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) preferred.
