About the role

Summary

The Spire is seeking an Engineer II, Gas to work in our System Planning department in Birmingham, AL.  This position will be responsible for the coordination and execution of engineering design studies using a computer-based model of the Spire natural gas distribution piping systems.  The position will work both individually and in a team environment to make recommendations on pipe sizing for annual studies, new business opportunities, pipe replacements, pipe abandonments, pipe reinforcements, and relocations of gas mains.  

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Perform system studies of the Company’s various pressure networks and expectation is to handle projects in multiple Spire territories
  • Evaluate and recommend appropriate size of gas mains and services – with present and future impact analysis to the hydraulic system – for new residential, commercial, and industrial opportunities
  • Determine the appropriate size required to replace existing gas mains exposed or in conflict with proposed civic improvements, such as sewer, street, and highway construction projects
  • Analyze a multitude of requests for various applications, including those pertaining to elevated delivery pressure, bypass sizing, load addition, economic development, emergency leak and damage repair, Gas Interruption Procedures, and regulator sizing
  • Perform ongoing analyses of strategic pipe replacement projects based on risk priority and efficiency
  • Lead in the development and maintenance of strategic replacement models including the evaluation of the appropriate gas main sizes required for all replacement programs
  • Analyze winter and summer settings for low pressure regulator stations, including the over-pressurization characteristics study mandated by the Public Service Commission for the low-pressure system
  • Study, initiate, and conduct winter gauge surveys and low-pressure regulator station correlation field tests through continuous communication with other departments and translate findings into tangible recommendations for system alterations and operations
  • Maintain system models to include updates from GIS, maps and field book notes, load zone revisions, develop loading data from load count, residential and commercial projections, evaluate results, and correlate results from studies
  • Participate in occasional Gas Control setting on a peak day to gain perspective on system hydraulics and monitor and compare actual vs system model results
  • Conduct in-house hydraulic model building on a consistent basis using SynerGi and CMM data to increase the accuracy and confidence levels of the system models
  • Perform long-term modeling studies that can support additional future growth to the distribution system

Essential Characteristics and Competencies

Required Education (certifications, licenses)

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering

Required knowledge, skill and abilities

  • Three years of related engineering experience, or
  • Two years of experience in application of system design concepts and system studies, or
  • Two years of experience with modeling software

  • Previous experience with general pipe engineering and/or design preferred.
  • Previous experience with modeling software a plus.

Physical demands, environment and schedule

  • Normal Work Environment - Work is normally performed in a shared office environment
  • Hybrid Schedule - Normal office Hours, Typically 7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., Monday through Friday
