This announcement may fill one or more police officer positions within the department. The Police Officer Intern position is an entry level position requiring completion of a Colorado P.O.S.T. certified police academy and successful completion of the Basic Colorado P.O.S.T. certification. Applicants with a current Colorado POST certification and one year of experience may qualify for a lateral transfer into a Police Officer I position.

Under the guidance of the Field Training Officer (FTO) and supervisors, this position will determine whether or not a crime has been committed within the jurisdiction of this College; discover all facts pertaining to the alleged crime; gather and preserve physical evidence; develop and follow up on all investigative leads; locate and apprehend the perpetrator(s); aid in the prosecution of the offender(s) by providing evidence of guilt which is admissible in a court of law; testify effectively as a witness in court. This position reports to Police Officer II’s (Corporals/Sergeant) and Chief of Police.
This position will undergo a Field Training Officer (FTO) program ranging from 4 - 5 months in duration. The time frame may be extended or reduced based on field performance while in the program and previous experience. Upon completion of the FTO program this position will be monitored by supervisors leading to working patrol shifts alone. The Police Officer Intern position will be eligible for promotion to Police Officer I upon completion of one year of patrol experience and successful completion of the FTO program.

Police Officer Intern Minimum Qualifications: One (1) year of relevant experience in an occupation related to the work assigned to this position

A combination of experience and education equal to one (1) year, or a P.O.S.T. certification.

• This position requires a State of Colorado Basic P.O.S.T. Certification. A copy of your P.O.S.T. certification conferred by the Colorado P.O.S.T. Board must be submitted at the time of application.
• If you have recently graduated from a P.O.S.T. certified academy and are awaiting your certification, you must submit your P.O.S.T. certification prior to the testing date in order to be allowed to test.
• Out of state applicants will NOT be accepted UNLESS they currently are Colorado P.O.S.T. certified. Fort Lewis College will not pay for an out of state officer to become P.O.S.T. certified.

To be eligible for appointment as a peace officer, an applicant must first be certified by the Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) Board. Please note that students in training to be law enforcement officers and those whose certification is no longer current are ineligible to serve as police officers in the state of Colorado.
