Senior/Staff Content Designer, Technical (CDC)
SkylightAbout the role
About Skylight
Skylight is a digital consultancy using design and technology to help government agencies deliver better public services. We’re at the forefront of a civic movement to reinvent how all levels of government serve families, patients, and many others in today's digital world.
If you want to play a part in driving this critical movement forward, we’d love for you to join our growing team of public interest technologists. The work we do matters.
About the job
At Skylight, content designers create clear, inclusive, and user-centered content that helps people complete tasks and understand complex systems. Technical content designers go further by ensuring accuracy, accessibility, and consistency across documentation, interfaces, and services.
What you’ll do
- Improve public services by shaping content that meets user needs in plain language, with inclusive and accessible patterns
- Write, edit, and organize content across complex flows — including interface copy, system messages, notifications, in-product guidance, help content, and documentation
- Apply accessibility and compliance standards — including Section 508 of the Rehabilitation Act (Section 508) — from the start
- Collaborate with privacy, legal, and security experts to design clear notices, consent patterns, and data-handling explanations that build trust
- Test content with users, run content experiments, and iterate based on evidence; define content success measures such as objectives and key results (OKRs) and key performance indicators (KPIs)
- Establish content governance and operations at scale — including content models, standards, review workflows, and reusable patterns in design systems
- Partner with engineers on docs-as-code practices, structured content, and continuous checks for accessibility and style
- Help federal teams sustain improvements by delivering training and enablement, and by leaving behind reusable resources such as templates, playbooks, and decision records
What we’re looking for
Minimum qualifications
- Experience shaping user-centered content across complex systems, including UX copy, documentation, or service content
- Strong writing and editing skills with attention to plain language, inclusivity, and accessibility
- Familiarity with accessibility standards such as Section 508 and how they apply to content
- Ability to test and iterate content using research, prototyping, or data-driven approaches
- Comfort working with engineers, researchers, and product managers to ensure accuracy and consistency
- Commitment to equipping federal teams with documentation, training, and mentoring so improvements last beyond the contract
- Ability to work effectively in a professional services environment
- Passion for improving public outcomes through great government services
- A mindset and work approach that align with Skylight’s core values
Nice-to-have qualifications
- Experience designing content governance systems at scale (e.g., standards, workflows, design system integration)
- Familiarity with compliance and security contexts such as Authority to Operate (ATO) processes
- Experience with structured content, docs-as-code, or technical documentation for APIs or developer platforms
- Track record of mentoring content designers and building content practices across organizations
- Experience working effectively on hybrid or distributed teams
Don’t meet 100% of the criteria but think you can do the job? We’d love to chat anyway! We’re on a mission to build diverse teams, and studies have shown that women and marginalized folks are less likely to apply to jobs if they don’t check every box.
