Director, Strategy Planning and Operations - Global Clinical Operations

The Director, Strategy Planning & Operations will partner with the functional VP(s)/Functional Head(s) and their Senior Leadership Teams (SLTs) to lead the development and execution of functional & corporate-level strategic initiatives, setting objectives and goals, resource & finance management, cross-functional alignment, issue identification, mitigation and resolution, while driving operational efficiencies. This role enables the vision and mission of an impactful, strategic, and quality-focused function that is well-aligned cross functionally, internal and external to Development Operations, Portfolio Management, and Biostatistics & Data Management (DO, PM & BDM) and Global Development (GD). This role collaborates with other GD Strategy Planning and Operations staff and functional SLTs, to drive value and strategic evolution of the specified organization.
This role is both strategic and tactical, requiring a nimble problem solver with strong analytical skills, interpersonal skills, discernment, and the ability to adeptly shift between diverse priorities. As this role is intended to support multiple functional areas, prioritization and ability to organize self & others is imperative.
In a typical day, you will:
- Support the Functional Head(s) and SLTs in the governance, development, delivery and implementation of strategic imperatives and objectives of the organization
- Monitor performance and quality delivery from the functional organization
- Guide Functional Heads and SLT with expert advice to enhance team performance and dynamics
- Spearhead implementation of global initiatives including tracking projects, timely delivery, and ensuring alignment with other functions
- Ensure stakeholder management across GD is being achieved by the functional SLT
- Facilitate the development and tracking of functional goals
- Collate status of goal completion, facilitates periodic review with SLT and timely escalation of issues
- Facilitate the development, maintenance, and review of management reports and dashboards to enable decision; derive insights for key performance indicators (KPI). Manages follow up to action items.
- Supports the coordination of materials and facilitates meeting schedule for Operational Reviews with key partners
- Ensure compliance with functional standard operating procedures
- Enable Functional resource & budget management activities
- Support and coordinate short, mid and long-range planning for headcount needs and participates in evaluation of sourcing models
- Facilitate demand/capacity review sessions with Resource Management and tracks functional resources
- Oversee job descriptions, requisition management, headcount openings, active postings at organizational level
- Collaborate with HR on employee onboarding, employee engagement, talent development, and calibration sessions; tracks and supports the facilitation of new-hire on-boarding
- May support regional site heads with space planning requirements
- Assist in functional budget management/tracking of spend for the department and liaise with cross functional leadership and finance
- Lead Senior Leadership Team (SLT) and Extended Leadership Team (ELT) meetings, including schedule, agenda, meeting materials, minutes, and action item follow-up.
- Facilitate functional department meetings by preparing agendas, meeting materials and tracks actions/ deliverables. Responsible for planning and execution of functional team building events, offsites, etc.
- In partnership with GD Communications and Chief of Staff, ensures appropriate communication cascade within/outside of GD and externally
- Track employee conference attendance and presentations by functional staff
- Act as representative for functional SLT at delegated meetings, events, activities
- May have direct supervision over support staff i.e. shared project coordinator support
- May act as a representative on behalf of the VP/Functional Heads and SLT to answer inquiries
To be considered for this role you must have:
- Bachelor’s degree and 12+ years drug development and project management experience required. Project management certifications (e.g., PMP) preferred.
- Demonstrated depth of understanding of the drug development process, specifically related to clinical trial management, vendor management, shared services, and clinical operations
- Demonstrated leadership experience in a management position
- Highly organized and detail oriented, while also demonstrating the ability to synthesize information and think strategically
- Highly self-motivated, flexible, proactive, able to follow through in an ambiguous, fast changing environment, and proven ability to meet deadlines under pressure
