Flint School of Nursing: Nursing in the 21st Century - Recent Statistics
- Registered nurses are the single largest group of healthcare professionals in the United States. Yet, the vacancy rate for RNs continues to rise and currently stands at 9.4 percent, according to a report from NSI Nursing Solutions (2025).
- There is a growing demand for nurses both in hospitals and the community; the employment of RNs is projected to grow 5% from 2024 to 2034, which is faster than the average for all occupations. (Bureau of Labor Statistics)
- However, faculty shortages at nursing schools across the country (currently at 8%), are limiting student capacity at a time when the need for professional registered nurses continues to grow.
- Budgetary constraints, an aging faculty population, and increasing job competition from clinical sites have contributed to this crisis.
