Within this position you will assist a wide variety of taxpayers ranging from businesses to individuals and third-party consults. You will ensure they understand their tax obligations and create a plan that is best suited to resolve the matter at hand based on their current circumstances.
The work we do at the Tax Department funds the entire state of Vermont, from our parks and schools to our highways, and affects every taxpayer in the State of Vermont. We don't just collect taxes; we help the State follow through on legislative initiatives and programs to fund many state functions. We believe we have a responsibility to educate taxpayers about their tax obligations and facilitate voluntary tax compliance. We serve Vermonters by administering our tax laws fairly and efficiently while striving to make the Department of Taxes the best place to work in the Vermont State government.
This position is within the Compliance Division, which is responsible for promoting and ensuring Vermont taxpayer compliance, with a focus on early intervention, education, outreach, and fairness. We value service, integrity, and employee growth, as we aim to support Vermont communities effectively and efficiently. Our team includes auditors, tax examiners, analysts, tax collection officers, and support staff.
Examples of this position's responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- Interact with taxpayers to arrange payment of outstanding taxes,
- retrieve missing returns, and provide information to prevent ongoing issues in the future.
- Draft and finalize payment schedules, propose settlements, and when appropriate, waive certain penalties, along with completing tasks related to the taxpayer's account.
The Tax Department permits eligible employees to request voluntary participation in the State of Vermont telework program. Telework eligibility is determined on a case-by-case basis and is consistent with state and Department policies.

Environmental Factors
Duties are performed primarily in a standard office setting. Workload is consistently heavy with constant need for prompt and accurate decision making. Duties involve sensitive, sometimes controversial subject which may lead to emotional and adversarial situations. Incumbents must be able to function independently in a confrontational, even hostile environment, must be able to prioritize their own workload and multi-task effectively. Duties are highly confidential in nature. Occasional travel may require use of state vehicle or private means of transportation.
Minimum Qualifications
Three (3) years or more of experience in collection of debts, adjustment of claims, determination of financial responsibility, handling accounts receivable, negotiating, or investigation of financial background.
OR
Four (4) years of more of experience in tax preparation or relatable customer service experience.
Special Requirements
Vermont Department of Taxes (VDT) Background Checks: This position will primarily support the Department of Taxes. Candidates must agree to be fingerprinted and pass a background check to be eligible for this position, which will involve access to sensitive federal tax information. Background checks are required by the Internal Revenue Service and are authorized under Vermont law. 3 V.S.A. § 241. In accordance with VDT Standard Operating Procedure 2018-01, Background Investigations, Vermont and national criminal record checks will be conducted on all candidates.
