GENERAL SUMMARY
The Lead Hematology Technician works under the supervision of the Core Laboratory Managers. The Lead Hematology Technician assists the Core Laboratory Manager and the Assistant Laboratory Manager of the Core Lab in the day-to-day operation and monitoring of the Hematology, sections of the Laboratory, and in the coordination of patient care activities. The Lead Hematology Technician also provides support to other departments of SOMC (Cancer Center and Anti-Coagulation Clinics). Performs and assesses laboratory tests and procedures. Performs quality control and routine maintenance. Performs other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS
Education:
• High School Diploma or successful completion of an equivalent High School Exam Required
• Associate Degree in Medical Technology or equivalent required
Licensure:
• MLT, MLS, or MT licensure by ASCP or AMT required
• BMVL required (Must maintain eligibility to drive as determined by SOMC insurance carriers
Experience:
• Approximately two years progressively more responsible related work experience is necessary in order to gain comprehensive technical knowledge of a wide variety of Hematology/Urinanalysis Coagulation techniques and procedures, equipment operation, and knowledge of regulatory and accrediting agency standards.
JOB SPECIFIC DUTIES AND PERFORMANCE EXPECTATIONS
The following is a summary of the major job duties of this job. Other duties may be performed, both major and minor, which are not mentioned below. Specific activities may change from time to time.
1. Coordinates the day-to-day operations of the Hematology, Urinalysis, and Coagulation testing sections of the Laboratory. Provides support to other labs within departments of SOMC (Cancer Center and Anti-Coagulation Clinic).
2. Assists the manager with staff assignments. Makes workflow decisions to ensure efficient operation of section to meet expected turn-around-times.
3. Monitors daily productivity of staff.
4. Coordinates and participates as needed in orientation of new employees and students. Completes staff competency checklists. Assists in developing educational needs.
5. Maintains inventory of supplies. Places Warehouse stock orders and special supply orders as needed.
6. Assists the Manager with review of policy and procedure manuals to comply with CAP and CLIA-88 standards. Prepares section to meet inspection requirements.
7. Ensures that instrument calibrations, maintenance, linearity checks, and correlations are performed; performs these functions as needed.
8. Reviews quality control results.
9. Ensures proficiency survey samples are distributed to staff and participates in proficiency testing program.
10. Promotes positive intradepartmental relationships.
11. Ensures staff delivers a high level of customer service following the SOMC Code of Conduct, using AIDET and AHEART.
12. Follows Red Rules and follows safety policies and ensures that staff does the same.
13. Serves as a resource person for the staff for technical related problems. Ensures that established policies and procedures are followed.
14. Keeps current with regulations affecting Core Laboratory.
15. Provides information regarding resource needs within area of responsibility. Provides information to aid budget preparation.
16. Makes self readily available for staff and customer needs.
17. Performs duties of MLT/MT/MLS.
18. Performs routine analytical testing on blood and other biological specimens using automated and non-automated instrumentation as per established procedures. Assess and correlates test results before reporting.
19. Performs, reviews, and documents quality control and quality assurance data. Documents all quality control failures and corrective actions taken. Reports documentation to manager for review.
20. Performs and records routine daily maintenance and resolves minor instrumentation problems. Performs and monitors preventative maintenance, troubleshooting, and repairs on equipment. Contacts outside service personnel when appropriate. Maintains documentation of maintenance and service records. Documents instrumentation issues and repairs and reports them to the manager.
21. Keeps work area clean and orderly.
22. Prepares and labels reagents, controls and stock solutions.
23. Performs clerical and computer tasks and procedures as required.
24. Performs calibrations and correlations as needed and provides documentation reported to the man
