The National Emergency Response Information System (NERIS) will revolutionize the way the United States Fire Administration collects and analyzes emergency response data. At FSRI, we are leading the development of this state-of-the-art system that will enable federal and local agencies to make near real-time decisions based on the data infrastructure, engineering principles, and computer algorithms employed and developed by the NERIS team.

This is a two-year term position.

The Post-doctoral Researcher performs independent research in preparation for a career as a scientific professional, contributing to NERIS and advancing fire safety research. The Post-doctoral Researcher will work closely with other researchers and colleagues to advance research excellence.

What you’ll learn and achieve:

As the Post-doctoral Researcher, you will play a key role in the rapid growth of UL as you:

  • Conduct primary research in public safety addressing concerns related to advancements in development of statistical models, decision analysis, and operations research. Topic areas include incident data from emergency responses, fire and EMS entity data, community health data, risk data, and loss data. Data sets may include, but are not limited to, time-series, geospatial, stochastic, and/or discrete in nature.

  • Apply knowledge of scientific principles to the specific research tasks.

  • Exercise a high degree of judgment in formulating, evaluating, and correlating broad research concepts, guiding the analysis of unique problems, and developing new and improved techniques and methods.

  • Assume primary responsibility for development of independent research.

  • Assist with data collection, evaluations, and support researchers on projects; analyze results.

  • Plan, design, and complete initial and follow up procedures as needed to test and validate results.

  • Perform research to a high standard and in accordance with all institutional and federal regulations.

  • Collaborate with ULRI colleagues and universities.

  • Contribute to and participate in webinars, conference presentations, writing papers for journal publications, facilitate training programs.

  • Perform other duties as assigned.
