About the role

Seeking a per diem Oncology Patient Care Assistant/ Unit Coordinator t to work per diem up to 16 hours/week. Flex with hours/days.

Performing under the direction of the RN/LPN and as a member of the unit-based patient care team, the Oncology Patient Care Assistant/Unit Coordinator (PCA/UC) performs duties of indirect patient care and operations. Indirect patient care activities include, but are not limited to, transport, ordering/providing food to patients, restocking and/or obtaining patient care supplies, setting up/disposal of chemotherapy buckets, and cleaning chairs between patients. In addition, the Oncology PCA /UC is responsible for responding in a timely manner to the needs of patients and family members and taking a proactive role in the efficient operation of the unit. They function within policies, procedures and guidelines of Sturdy Memorial Hospital in accordance with Joint Commission, CDC and OSHA standards. In addition, the Oncology PCA/UC will perform clerical, receptionist and unit coordinating duties on individual patient care units. Operational/clerical activities included, but are not limited to, entering lab orders, making patient appointments, checking in patients, tracking and reviewing data/ reports, taking meeting minutes, ordering supplies, reviewing/resolving coding, coordinating with support group leaders, developing documents for support groups, transporting medications to and from the pharmacy, managing the Microblog for pickup of medications from pharmacy, answering phone calls, and collaboration with the Clinical Coordinator(s) and Service Line Manager.

Required Skills/Qualifications/Training/Experience:

  • Demonstrates the knowledge and skills needed to assist in providing indirect patient care, good organizational skills, personal maturity, accuracy and flexibility.
  • Previous knowledge of medical terminology, typing, computer skills and Unit Secretary experience preferred
  • Successful completion of orientation
  • Proficient in English
  • Possess excellent interpersonal skills and adaptability, creating a favorable image in relationship to the Nursing Department and the hospital as a whole
  • Ability to perform simple math calculations
  • Develop and maintain positive relationships across all areas of responsibility
  • Demonstrate commitment to customer relations and all basic concepts of continuous quality improvement and preventing error from reaching the patient
  • Provides timely, positive responses to the needs of all customers including patients, families, co-workers and physicians 

Essential Job Functions:

  • Transporting patients to the infusion room or to exit doors for pickup
  • Ordering and bringing food to patients
  • Restocking/obtaining patient care supplies
  • Setup and disposal of chemotherapy buckets
  • Cleaning chairs between patients
  • Making patient appointments
  • Checking in patients
  • Answering phone calls
  • Entering lab orders
  • Entering work orders: repairs, environmental services, IT, etc.
  • Tracking and reviewing data/reports
  • Ordering supplies
  • Taking meeting minutes and documenting
  • Coordinating with support group leaders
  • Developing documents for support groups
  • Reviewing/resolving coding entries
  • Transporting medications to and from the pharmacy
  • Managing the Microblog for pickup of medications from the pharmacy
  • Collaborating with the Clinical Coordinator(s) and Service Line Manager
  • Other functions as assigned

Educational Requirements:

  • High School Graduate or equivalent
  • Previous knowledge of medical terminology, typing, computer skills and Unit Secretary experience preferred
  • Successful completion of orientation

License/Certification:   

  • BLS competent
