This position supports the work of the Y, a leading nonprofit, charitable organization committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. An Age-group Coordinator at the Whatcom Family YMCA maintains a supportive, positive atmosphere that welcomes and respects all individuals, promotes the potential of all youth, and provides a quality experience to both youth and their families while participating fully as member of a camp staff team to implement a successful camp program. Applicants should have experience with preschool aged children in a group setting, be comfortable planning curriculum, and direct assistant staff in day-to-day activities.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
In partnership with the Program Coordinator and Program Directors, supervise camp staff and volunteers.
Communicate YMCA policies and procedures.
Provide ongoing support through role modeling effective group management, ensuring supplies are available, and identifying when staff need breaks.
Assist in planning and leading staff meetings and trainings.
Complete mid-summer evaluations.
Build positive relationships with campers and families.
Develop and maintain relationships with school personnel, parent groups and other organizations and agencies related to assigned programs. Respond to all parent and community inquiries and complaints in a timely manner.
Professionally communicate as needed, confidential and evaluative information regarding program participants with parents/guardians through various means including but not limited to parent communication and parent/teacher conferences.
Model and teach YMCA core values—honesty, respect, caring, and responsibility—in a professional manner consistent with the mission and personnel policies of Whatcom Family YMCA Summer Camp Programs.
Demonstrate and enforce strong safety and risk management practices.
Plan and lead culturally relevant, developmentally appropriate activities aligned with YMCA values, including camp games, rainy-day activities, age-group games, and opening and closing activities.
Communicate daily and weekly schedules clearly to counselors and campers.
Implement camp policies and procedures related to attendance, medical needs, discipline, abuse prevention, and emergency response.
Recognize and support the resolution of individual and group conflicts using developmentally appropriate social/emotional learning strategies, camp values and procedures.
Maintain positive working relationships with YMCA staff and model strong relationship-building skills in all interactions.

QualificationsQUALIFICATIONS:
Availability beginning March 1 for leadership planning, preferred.
Demonstrated experience and background in:
Early Childhood Education
Behavior management and positive conflict resolution
Outdoor or recreation skills relevant to camp programming
Supporting participants with special needs
Ability to plan, organize, and implement age-appropriate and developmentally appropriate activities.
Experience working with diverse populations and the ability to build positive, authentic relationships with individuals from a variety of backgrounds.
Current CPR (Adult, Infant & Child) and First Aid, AED certifications, prior to day of camp.
Lifeguard and Open Water Training preferred
Complete Praesidium Child Abuse prevention training before working directly with children.
Must have or be in the process of obtaining the following:
Cleared Portable Background Check from MERIT
Negative TB Test
HIV/Bloodborne Pathogen training
DCYF Required Trainings
Food Handlers Card
MMR Immunization Record
